Some mushrooms that are in the Mycena family are pictured here on a nurse log in the forest with evergreen needles on it. There are six small white mushrooms pictured here, one upside down, growing out of the side of the log. They do have gills, and their caps are also a litlle pointy.

A mushroom growing in the forest near a deteriorating log. There are some colorful pine needles in the photo as well. This mushroom is small, light brown with white edges on the cap with a white stem. Google says it is a Inocybe kauffmanii mushroom, but I don't trust Google on this. I need to buy a book in order to 100% identity these.

Some mushrooms found by some nurse logs in the forest. There are also brown and green evergreen tree needles pictured. There are numerous mushrooms clustered together. They are small, their caps are pictured with a looking down view. Their caps are yellow around the edges and fade into a medium brown toward the center. I'm not sure what kind of mushrooms these guys are, but a guess would be Hypholomas.

A mushroom found in the forest, it is all white-stem and all, small, curved cap. It may be a snowy waxcap??
It is growing in debris on the forest floor, brown leaves, reddish pine needles, with a sparce amount of greenery.

Definitely. While you can't learn all poisonous fungi, foraging beginners definitely should start with learning to identify some common poisonous fungi. At least some representatives from genera like Amanita, Cortinarius, Entoloma, Inocybe. And to learn distinguishing some similar species.

Inocybe lilacina? Magical and toxic to dogs/canines. I see quite a few inocybe ingestions in the group. The other is molybdenum (GI irritant). Also, 24 cases of children/adults consuming toxic foraged wild mushrooms in Monterey and SF, CA. Death caps/Amanita phalloides. 1 fatality so far.

Mushroom that is pale violet around the edges and cream coloured in the middle. I think it is a Silvery Violet Cory

Two totally different types of fungi (Psilocybe and Inocybe) somehow came up with the same psychedelic compound, psilocybin, through completely different biochemical pathways.
University of Utah recently sequenced the DNA of 52 Psilocybe species and traced the origins back about 65 million years.

Met up with a smooth-spored Inocybe at the Cain mushroom foray that had these photogenic metuloid cheilocystidia on the gill edges. Something in the ballpark of I. nitidiuscula.
