It's the same phenomenon you're seeing in this F-15E afterburner exhaust, sometimes called Mach diamonds, and with the same cause: over-pressured gases creating shock waves.

The shape of the champagne bottle (small neck, large body) & the high CO2 partial pressure are like jet or rocket exhaust!

Sorry, reminded me of something... Ever seen Mach diamonds from the exhaust of a piston engine..?

I /think/ that's what's going on here. Visible in the two night runs from around the half-way point. Can't think of another explanation.

(Yes, I'm into European pulling sports. It's nuts.)

Ever wondered why the exhaust of an F-22 looks like it’s full of glowing diamonds? Those patterns are called shock cells or Mach diamonds. They appear because the jet blast is moving faster than sound.

On 4 July 2006, ESA's Thomas Reiter was launched on STS-121, the first time a European astronaut has headed to the International Space Station to join an Expedition long-duration crew. His #Astrolab mission is planned to last to the end of the year.
