Like- I know part of the fun of Hazbin is that it has this almost magical realism angle to it in which is a fantasy setting with magic and powers and stuff but its also fairly similar to real life, and its fun to explore that.

Carnahan looooooves his Everything Happens For A Reason plotting, and the vague touches of that and some really undersold magical realism help keep this feeling specific to him even though Affleck/Damon are the front men. It doesn't all work, but contributes to this having the right flavor of pulp.

I read most of them in English (except for the book by the Dutch author) and in a physical format. One was read in ebook format, and 2 as audiobooks (during especially busy times)

When I was much younger, I read a ton of baseball lit & fell hard for the whole cornfed (faux-)magical realism. I'm still really susceptible to all of that, but revisiting the field (heh) now is very odd.

So many explicit, unexamined assumptions grounded in white supremacy, holy shit.

This section, from Coover's "McDuff on the Mound" (a riff on "Casey at the Bat" from the pitcher's POV), is so delightful with its sheer pomo ebullience.

McDuff shook to watch him. He was ageless, older than Mud ville certainly, though Mudville claimed him as their own. Some believed that "Casey" was a transliteration of the initials "K.C." and stood for King Christ. Others, of a similar but simpler school, opted for King Corn, while another group believed it to be a barbarism for Krishna. Some, rightly observing that "case" meant "event," pursued this reasoning back to its primitive root, "to fall," and thus saw in Casey (for a case was also a container) the whole history and condition of man, a history perhaps as yet incomplete. On the other hand, a case was also an oddity, was it not, and a medical patient, and maybe, said some, mighty Casey was the sickest of them all. Yet a case was an example, argued others, plight, the actual state of things, thus a metaphysical example, they cried —while a good many thought all such mystification was so much crap, and Casey was simply a good ballplayer. Certainly, it was true, he could belt the hell out of a baseball. All the way to Gehenny, as the umpire liked to put it. Anyway, McDuff knew none of this. He only knew that here he was, that here was Casey, and the stage was set. He didn't need to know the rest. Just that was enough to shake any man.

The music in sinners was perfect and didn’t rattle me because of all the magical realism. This movie had nothing magical about it (Cept dem tracking shots) and just felt like they slapped shit on that seemed cool.
