Like- I know part of the fun of Hazbin is that it has this almost magical realism angle to it in which is a fantasy setting with magic and powers and stuff but its also fairly similar to real life, and its fun to explore that.
And I understand that they want to hammer how little agency Angel has

Carnahan looooooves his Everything Happens For A Reason plotting, and the vague touches of that and some really undersold magical realism help keep this feeling specific to him even though Affleck/Damon are the front men. It doesn't all work, but contributes to this having the right flavor of pulp.

My magical realism novel, Broken Land Dreams, is on Amazon Monday January 19 in both Kindle and print. Can Jacob Traum, with the help of his hired power from the future, Xen Kohen, defeat the Ratocratic right wing rats, Ratty Ghouliani, Ayn, Ratnd, and Pete the Pizza Rat and save Brooklyn?

Genres included everything from scifi to historical novels, to magical realism, to coming of age, to apocalyptic novels. I read most of them in English (except for the book by the Dutch author) and in a physical format. One was read in ebook format, and 2 as audiobooks (during especially busy times)

When I was much younger, I read a ton of baseball lit & fell hard for the whole cornfed (faux-)magical realism. I'm still really susceptible to all of that, but revisiting the field (heh) now is very odd.

So many explicit, unexamined assumptions grounded in white supremacy, holy shit.
for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture*, I'm reading lots of baseball lit.

This section, from Coover's "McDuff on the Mound" (a riff on "Casey at the Bat" from the pitcher's POV), is so delightful with its sheer pomo ebullience.

is a combination of magical sanitation and ritual work and arcane forensics, and is incredibly specialized. A field that mandates both clinical and compassionate approaches, and often drains its workers of the latter.

(Yes this is the percolating magical realism yunwoo. SOS.)

This👇

There's a difference between realism and doomerism.

And we keep walking down the road of magical thinking over and over again. "Mueller will save us. Some institution will save us."

Endless. And for those of us who keep telling people to stop daydreaming about it are exhausted.
Bingo. A lot of people are doing disingenuous straw man stuff to pretend there's no distinction here.

I'm honestly not sure why!

It's like people have a psychogical need to pretend our institutions are stronger than they are currently *proving to be*
Realism = “This could happen, let’s think about the possibility and what we could do if it did.”

Doomerism = “There will be no more elections, ICE will prevent anybody from voting, Trump is now dictator forever.”

Day 17 of #WomenReads is Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. IIRC, this was a debut novel, and if that's the case it's even more impressive. I'm kind of a sucker for magical realism, and this book epitomizes it. 💙📚#BookSky

The music in sinners was perfect and didn’t rattle me because of all the magical realism. This movie had nothing magical about it (Cept dem tracking shots) and just felt like they slapped shit on that seemed cool.

dark. They crawls out of a derelict building to listen:

"News just in, magical realism is the newest genre to merge with The River of Memories. All thanks to the glorious Old Ones, we can now create new outcomes. Long lasts the Old Ones.

The message is short, but sends shivers down the spine.
