Butterfly milkweed on a battlefield prairie, looking north Passionflower vine looks so tropical, but it is native to the prairies here. They sprawl across the tall plants and pop up where you least expect them. The fritillary caterpillars they host, and their fruits make them extra special. Monkey flower, in a lower and wetter portion of the battlefield Sunset at the battlefield. I used to race to get to a certain point in the trail with the perfect sunset views before the sun fell.

They flower in May or June with hanging blooms of yellow and red and produce -up to a dozen ledves per plant. Erect seed pods remain most of the summer. Insects are lured into the leaf opening under the hood by nectar on the colorful petal-like" appendages and the edges of the opening, Once inside the hood the insects become confused by the many transparent areas in the upper parts of the leaves which abdear as exits. Keeping a foothold on the glassy smooth upper surface of the tube is difficult and eventually the insects are trapped in the lower tube by sharp downward pointing hairs. After falling into a pool of liquid at the base of the leaf, the captive is digested and absorbed as food through the plants thin lower walls.

Two concentric circles of color squares. Bloom - is Result When Marchand and Sobsey began the project now known as This Earthen Door, they followed the garden clock, which dictated when they would plant and when they could harvest. Nature thus controlled the order in which the artists extracted pigments from the individual flowering plants. This chromotaxy represents pigments from each of the 65 plants the artists grew for their contemporary interpretation of Dickinson's herbarium, and the layout indicates the season in which they bloom. Spring is in the center ring, summer forms the outer ring, autumn is lined up along the bottom, and winter-with the cheerful pop of color from a Christmas cactus flower-is at the top. Talk not to me of Summer Trees This large-scale chromotaxy was created by Marchand and Sobsey specifically for this exhibition. It incorporates a selection of trees in the Brandywine's Waterloo Mills Preserve, a 170-acre property located near Devon, Pennsylvania. At Waterloo Mills, just as at the Laurels Preserve, the Conservancy has undertaken a large tree repopulation effort that includes areas of hardwood forest impacted by historic flooding from Hurricane Ida in 2021. The Brandywine's tree restoration mission is ongoing as climate change and habitat disruption continue. As part of this process, large areas have been reforested with native trees and shrubs, which help reestablish habitat and biodiversity. The artists wanted to highlight this Conservancy effort while showcasing the dramatically different appearance of leaves in summer and autumn, signaling the cyclical nature of time. The pigments of tree leaves or needles gathered by hand by Kevin Fryberger, Natural Resource Manager at Waterloo Mills, as well as by the artists during several visits, were used by the artists for this piece. The lower register of this grid records the summer hues through washes and rubbings. As trees prepare for winter, they shed the green chlorophyll from their leaves to conserve energy, revealing other pigments that have been there all along. The upper register displays the autumnal shades. The 14 trees in this chromotaxy are alternate leaf dogwood, American chestnut, basswood, catalpa, chokecherry, flowering dogwood, hawthorn, horse chestnut, juniper, pin cherry, sassafras, shadbush, sweet bay magnolia, and tulip poplar.

A small back yard typical of many properties in northern England. This particular yard has six large raised beds containing an assortment of native wildflowers. At the extreme bottom left is a bog garden in which the foliage of water avens is just visible. Next to the small rectangular pond are two raised beds: in the first, both magenta bloody cranesbill and blue forget me nots are in flower. In front of that bed is a larger, lower bed in which purple and white spikes of heath woundwort and pompoms of pink thrift can be seen; although the foliage of the devils bit scabious can be seen, it is yet to flower. In the next bed, tall chicory plants are just coming into bud, while the white umbellifers of valerian and white and yellow of ox eye daisies can be seen. Behind a honeysuckle in an adjacent trough is another bed containing woodland flowers: deep maroon dusky cranesbills and bluebells, which are interspersed with ferns. Standing alone to the rear of the yard is a very large hexagonal planter containing an acer with green foliage, while in the foreground are two smaller hexagonal planters, each of which contains another acer; to the right is one with green foliage, the other with yellow leaves fringed with pink. All of the acers are surrounded by smaller plants; germander speedwell, dog violets and heath pearlwort. Between the two smaller hexagonal planters is another tiny pond. Interspersed among all of the raised beds and troughs are numerous pots containing a wide variety of plants, including: lavender; rosemary; thyme; sage; borage; a vibernum; ivy; and a small clematis or two. Right in the middle there's a stand from which various birdfeeders are hanging: a general seed feeder; a tray of mealworm; a niger seed feeder for the resident goldfinches; and an old feeder full of scraps of sheeps wool and straw to provide nesting material. Rear left: there is a tall, narrow raised bed full of forget me not plants covered in tiny blue flowers with the taller magenta blooms of bloody cranesbill behind them. Next to this is a larger, lower lying bed containing numerous spikes of red campion in full bloom and, to the rear, the broader leaves of chicory plants that are just coming into bud. Just visible behind the foliage of the chicory is a small, hexagonal bee hotel. Other assorted wildflowers growing in troughs and plant pots surrounding the raised beds include: devils bit scabious; common knapweed; bugle; valerian; ox eye daisies; honeysuckle; dusky cranesbill; bluebells; and various ferns and grasses. This particular bed has a woodland theme and is filled with plants that love shade: to the rear of the bed are the broad leaves and distinctive deep maroon flowers of dusky cranesbill; in the middle are the elongated leaves and arching flower spikes of bluebells; and the bright green fronds of hard ferns; in the foreground are the bright, vibrant green trefoil leaves of wood sorrel. Moss covered logs are buried among the plants in an attempt to create a more naturalistic environment.

3 large purply pink thistle flower heads each a composite mass of tiny thread-like flowers sticking up and out- classic pin-cusion effect. The centre flower head is past prime and starting to brown. Behind the capitulae are a bunch of prickly thistle leaves in medium-dark green, beyond that blurred rich green mixed foliage and grass.

A golden furrow bee feeding on chamomile nectar. I like to encourage native species in my gardens but it's not an exclusive arrangement for me, I make some exceptions. Chamomile isn't invasive, so it was a safe option for my garden. With that said, it spreads fast and furious. The seeds are tiny and each flower produces many seeds and each plant many flowers. I love chamomile. It's lovely, it smells great, and it's edible. But I'd go cautiously with planting it in a native friendly garden. Our local native plants tend to be fairly slow growers and chamomile would offer stiff competition. It has a place in my garden but if you're shy on space, or if you don't plant on culling extra plants from time to time, I'd try a different flower. Since I've already discussed the non-native side of the equation I feel the need to include this last point: it's also been feeding native bees as well. It's a beneficial flower in many ways, despite my hesitation. Thanks for reading if you got this far. Apparently I have a lot to say about this dainty little flower and the cute bee that visited it.

In the distance the tallest plant in the picture, illuminated and looking a golden colour, is a Ficus tree. Star jasmine Vine ,not a member of the olive family not a true jasmine plant but a dog bane, still, very pleasant-smelling and very cute and attractive the way it has sprays of White that burst open (bloom) into these golden-centered tubular shaped, star flowers. The very first open flowers upon this Desert Willow or Willow leafed catalpa flowering bush are trumpet shaped w deep golden and white interiors and wine burgundy color, very much depending on light conditions. this desert willow, not a real willow, has a beautiful smell to it which is why I purchased it from Costco about 7 years ago.

No new nature friends lately but it is fancy flower season around here! Native plants are always best, but the occasional non-native is alright as long as they're not prone to spreading or outcompeting native species.

(There are irises native to North America but I'm pretty sure mine are European!)
