Seeing Philip Pullman speaking in the Sheldonian is a bit like wondering if you just crossed into another world and you should look for Jordan College after you leave. Magical.

Arriving in Oxford where we are expecting a pretty full house for the Vice-Chancellor’s Sheldonian Series event on "cancel culture" tonight. David Isaac will try to get Helen Mountfield, Zoe Williams, Toby Young and myself to shed some light on the topic

There’s also Kathleen Stock in conversation with Nigel Biggar. I’m trying to figure out if these are actually associated with the university - it looks like they might simply be hiring the Sheldonian for these? So it’s a commercial thing (still bad of course!).

Off to interview Yanis Varoufakis (please resist any urge to tell me which of his opinions you, or indeed I, disagree with) at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. Discussing his captivating & extraordinary new book, Raise Your Soul.

Another graduation in the Sheldonian today in Oxford.
(started in 1670).

With parents around, it is a good day to check the almost universal law that boys are taller than their mother.

'Woke up this morning with
a terrific urge to lie in bed all day
and read. Fought against it for a minute.

Then looked out the window at the rain.
And gave over. Put myself entirely
in the keep of this rainy morning'

Also saw Demis give a talk to a packed audience in the Sheldonian, I think in the same year. I came up from Surrey for both. It was clear amazing stuff was happening in this space!

Schiff played Art of the Fugue in the Sheldonian, Oxford this month to a packed house. A profound occasion, and one not to be missed. Sad for music lovers, but so pleased that his principles stop him from travel to US for now.
Now, in 2025, the pianist releases the following statement, saying he feels "morally obligated" to withdraw from all engagements in the U.S. for the 2025-26 season.
