China is just another oligarchy now, wielding power, and claiming legitimacy in the name of the people using the language of the past.

That's not even bad! China is accomplishing a lot now. But thinking its substantially different from the average EU social democracy in 2026 is mistaken.

I can see it now, the Cuba democracy crisis of 2032: a social democrat state parked just off the coast of Florida, with DEMOCRACY pointed directly in that direction :-)

i think it might be worse depending on conditions, i just think you might very well get another chance at american social democracy in that situation and you shouldnt treat it like a perma-loss

This is an important discussion but let’s not loose sight of the central role social media platforms play in these scenarios.

The platforms are the distribution channel. That is still a key space to focus on, also in terms of of regulation

AI-Powered Disinformation Swarms Are Coming for Democracy
“We are moving into a new phase of informational warfare on social media platforms where technological advancements have made the classic bot approach outdated,” says Jonas Kunst, a professor of communication at BI Norwegian Business School and one of the coauthors of the report. For experts who have spent years tracking and combating disinformation campaigns, the paper presents a terrifying future. "What if AI wasn't just hallucinating information, but thousands of AI chatbots were working together to give the guise of grassroots support where there was none? That's the future this paper imagines—Russian troll farms on steroids,” says Nina Jankowicz, the former Biden administration disinformation czar who is now CEO of the American Sunlight Project.

Absolutely insane to me people still look at Democrats or Democracy or etc and are like "wow this is not very good at fulfilling its purpose" and the purpose is just some artifact of your imagination working in concert with your 4th grade social studies class and a bunch of propaganda.

More writing on education, authority, and democracy to follow.
Why a social media ban would raise big questions for schools
Banning under-16s from social media would not remove the problem - and it could deny schools their role in empowering young people to protect themselves from danger, writes Simon Lightman

It was white supremacy vs democracy and white supremacy won, mainly because 90M Americans couldn't be bothered to vote. Shameful.

But I think those who sat it out were influenced by Elon Musk's social media manipulation and MSM's hostility regarding Biden's belief that the rich should pay taxes.

Agreed. Huge respect to Mamdani (and the people of NYC) for calling himself a democratic socialist. I'm not sure the S word goes down well in places where people are convinced it means communist. Maybe 'radical social democracy' of the Scandi variety will be a better battle cry in most places.

Women, gays, drug prices, student debt, social security, clean energy, science policy, public schools, SCOTUS, church & state separation, due process, free speech, public health and Democracy itself were all on the line last November.

If that wasn't enough to earn your vote you're a lost cause.

What Was the Golden Age of Social Democracy?
For 40 years, social democratic parties radically improved life for workers. The labor movement and worker militancy made it possible.

But if we have a new architecture ready this time round, our social upheavals might finally result in something lasting.

Our pattern to date has been amorphous protest.

But no change can occur, or last, without architecture.

Advances in artificial intelligence offer the prospect of manipulating beliefs and behaviors on a population-wide level. By adaptively mimicking human social dynamics, they threaten democracy. There should be a moratorium on building data centers.

IMO, DT just wants his little private club so he can go hang out with the other thug dictators and pretend it is justified. They can share plans and tips for being awful on the taxpayer's dime.

DT has to make everything into a member's only social club.

I hope Democracy leaders won't indulge him.

irish direct democracy in the 21st century is extremely funny because on social policy both the traditional government parties and the left-wing opposition are true believers in citizen assemblies being able to guide public opinion which worked until it uh didn't
