Doctrinal shift from space being an extension of air operations emphasizing recce and episodic strike operations to space control and the need to keep a persistent crewed presence in space to defend crewed space infrastructure, and perform the peacetime roles performed by terrestrial naval forces

When I say 'fighters', I don't really mean in the terrestrial sense... Think of them more like a smaller Penrose with a shit tonne of missiles, or some point defences, and less like a classic sci-fi space fighter.
It exists to either truck missiles around or extend missile defence coverage.

my favorite kind of AI generation by far is the "complete fever dream, no sane sober human mind conceives this, utter clusterfuck, the closer you look at it the more lunatic it is"

I still can't get past the volume of satellites needed to match terrestrial capacity. Putting 1 GW of compute in space takes tens of thousands of satellites. That's a lot of launches.

Space solar so dominated the use case, that terrestrial solar had to be termed.

The firs grid-connected, utility-scale solar facility was constructed in 1982 with a capacity of 1 MW. The next year, the same company - ARCO - built a 5.2 MW facility that held the ‘world’s largest’ title for a while.

## Automated Wavelet Decomposition and Recurrence Quantification for Enhanced Solar Flare Prediction within the 11-Year Solar Cycle
**Abstract:** Accurate prediction of solar flares is crucial for protecting space-based assets and mitigating terrestrial disruptions. This paper proposes a novel methodology leveraging automated wavelet decomposition and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) for enhanced flare prediction within the framework of the 11-year solar cycle. By decomposing photospheric magnetic field data into multi-resolution components and characterizing their temporal recurrence patterns, the system aims to identify subtle precursors indicative of impending flare activity.

First is power. Yes, space is a more efficient setting for collecting solar radiation. But data centers need a lot of power - currently in the 10s of MW. Assuming 10kW/sq m from solar panels (vs. < 1 on earth) implies 1000s of sq m of panels. (Terrestrial) solar panels weigh ~10Kg/sq m.

The void of space, once a boundless frontier, may soon be pierced by the glow of artificial intelligence. Data centers, those gargantuan computing facilities that power the A. I. boom, may soon transcend the terrestrial realm, floating in orbit like celestial bodies. nytimes.com

Sort of like a small "micro" terrestrial version of a black hole in outer space, eh? 😉

I’d like to finish and post more personal stuff. Most of what I do at home is really to learn some new technique or process. I tend to not finish it once I get the “aha” moment.

In the meantime, here’s some lookdev/shading stuff I’ve done for work in the last few years that’s no longer NDA. 🧵

Companies are proposing space-based AI data centers to relieve terrestrial land, power and water limits, with Google’s Project Suncatcher planning test launches in 2027 as firms spend "hundreds of billions" and OpenAI commits $1.4 trillion.

You do not need to belong, that is already presumed by the terrestrial sensations you too feel in your toes
That is like working for water or air, while held back by distance, space between, or error of incontinent misgiving is decidedly a default of the life you live here.

HH-222, the Waterfall Nebula, isn't flowing gas but a 10-light-year-long bow shock. This colossal wave, caused by a jet from the V380 Orionis system, moves through space, appearing like a terrestrial waterfall 1,500 light-years away in Orion.

I recently saw a space solar power advocate claim that battery costs had stopped coming down several years ago and thus they didn't see terrestrial solar+storage as a threat to space solar and I was really left scratching my head at that

"It’s an open question whether we can conceive of some genuinely new ideas about how all this might transpire differently (...) how space might force us to rethink the terrestrial mundane rather than being an epic stage set onto which earthbound concerns can be exported intact."
