Just got my my Merlin app out to try to work out if the incredible cacophony was jays, crows and magpies or just lots of jays.
Ijust at that exact moment a tawny owl called, then 2 redpolls flew into the owl's tree.

Blue Shieldbugs, Zicrona caerulea.

@vannabartlett.bsky.social and I saw several in waterside vegetation at West Acre, Norfolk, today.

One of my favourite insects, the Hornet Robberfly sucking the insides out of another fly from last weekend!
Taken at the only reliable colony in the Essex that's not been built on or under direct threat from development :(

Water voles along the river bank down by the sewerage works. Wildlife just happens, and more often than not in the most unexpected places.

Time for some #dragonfly action. I saw a couple of mature male Black-tailed Skimmers last weekend but they refused to pose for a phot so this immature one without the blue colour will have to do. #invertebrates #ukwildife @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

One of the animals which everyone looks out for when rockpooling are crabs and prawns. Most people will have found a Green crab/Shore crab or a Common or Rockpool prawn. But there are over 75 different species in our costal waters.

A Rabbit in my garden this morning - once so common here - now the opposite.
There have been no kits born here for 4 years. A very worrying development - such an integral part of the food chain, suddenly disappeared.

This Long-clawed porcelain crab , Pisidia longicornis, looks quite big so close, but it is only tiny. They typically have a carapace length of 1 cm.

This tiny one is a Small-headed clingfish , Apletodon dentatus. It is known as a 'clingfish' because they cling to the underside of rocks on the lower shore or rock pools. They have adapted pelvic fins that form a suction cup that allows them to cling to the rocks in their habitat.

We found some more interesting fish while rockpooling in Porlock. This colourful one is a Corkwing wrasse , Symphodus melops.

🧵1/3 Raptors in the urban environment.
I'm over in Shaftesbury today, where there's a derelict workshop at the back of a High St shop. It hasn't yet been turned into an AirBnB studio.
This location is home to feral pigeons, House Sparrows, Jackdaws, Wrens, Robins, small rodents.
