Last night I needed release more than refinement. I was thinking about arriving in Como by train and a friend’s photo from Oregon. This is what resulted.
Two steep green forested hillsides with yellowish-brown grasses meet into a valley with homes up and down the hillside, pine trees and cedar trees. This is reminiscent of a viewing of Como upon arrival and a friend’s picture from Oregon from my memory. At the bottom are three cars along a street that runs around the lake. Waves come toward the shoreline reflecting the green trees and light pinks from the homes. Across the top third is a mist or a fog creating a grayness and blue hue with mist giving way to grayish clouds at the top right. The bottom corners have blue painters tape still stuck on. The paper was still drying, not the highest quality. Painting play doesn’t need to be fancy. It just needs to happen.

And silicon Valley even glorifies a certain type of working homeless. There are many stories of engineers living at their office and sleeping in their cars in the parking lot. Talking about taking advantage of all the perks of working at their company (like gyms with showers).

“The working homeless” is not a myth. They want us to be invisible so they don’t have to answer for what this capitalistic hellscape is doing to us all.

It’s real. We exist. We’re a growing class of people (which is why folks want to look away). And I’ll never be quiet about it.

🧵 Sending out gratitude to all first responders today! Last night, we got stuck in a ~40 min delay on WB 118 to Simi Valley. I can't find any news stories on it, tho from what I saw on the CHP site while stuck, it sounds like an initial two-car collision that came to involve a few more cars.

Among the critics is a former San Franciscan. Kit Koenig moved from San Francisco's Noe Valley to Oregon in 1989. She and her husband eventually landed in Portland, which with its small-town, neighborly feel seemed like what San Francisco was 30 years ago, she said. But, earlier this fall, Koenig sighed as she looked at the newly constructed two-story rowhouse across the street from her home. The buildings are too large for their residential neighborhood, she said, and because parking isn't required for the new homes, she fears the streets will eventually fill up with cars. She's also concerned that the growing number of multifamily buildings is making it harder for landlords like her to stay in business.

Views of a lost work of art. I painted an outdoor scene in oils on the coarse canvas textures of an alcove connecting the rear entrance with the large ground floor rooms. The scene was what one could see a half mile away at St Patrick's Seminary, then a large plot of mostly pristine Menlo Park land.
These are scans from a couple slides of an indoor mural I painted inside a three story mansion I lived in from 1973 to 1982, where I did art embellishing that house for my room and board. In those years there was a nearby parcel of largely untouched land with the Catholic Seminary in its center. It was acres of grassland with oak trees clustered here and there. it was what the San Francisco Bay Mid Peninsula used to be like before the urbanization swallowed it all up. As a child I was a passenger in cars there and watched the flickering perspective based vanishing points of precisely planted rows of trees in wide orchards still covering portions of the Santa Clara Valley. The green beauty of sunlight shining through the blades of fresh grass like tiny stained glass bits delighted my young eyes, and in paintings I worked to show that effect of 'transmitted light' on grass using 'glazing' methods like the Dutch masters, and Chesley Bonestell, used. In such paintings a light lemon yellow coat would be applied and allowed to dry until I could paint over it with a rich green, diluted a little with a clear oil paint medium and 'scrubbed' onto the surface so some of the yellow undercoat 'shines' through. This method was used in works like my wraparound cover for Carl Sagan's 'The Dragons of Eden' and my grassy Space Colony interior paintings. This mural used such methods for the leaves overhead and the sunward part of the field, with duller opaquely painted details for the scenery opposite the Sun. The ceiling lamp was made a part of the work by showing it hanging from a tree limb on the rounded dome like ceiling. This was done in media that would have lasted centuries. Alas, such works are nothing to people anymore, the next owners painted over or stripped away everything. Murals are not worth doing as their existence cannot be counted on for any length of time. And, sadly, most of that lovely St Patricks Seminary field is also gone, a victim of urban sprawl.

So I won't add Derail Valley to my GOTY list because it already won last year even though I had Descent on like three of them before, but I'm just going to say that Derail Valley is proof to me that if Freelancer was released today I'd probably still be all over it and get totally obsessed with it.

I had to hook up my personal DH4 to the front to provide the extra pull to make it over the hill leaving the harbor. I stalled out later, and had enough so I attached my own DE6 to the front and completed the job with a dual DE6 locomotive. Dumb triple DE2 train with the demonstrator as the lead. This was silly and it was fun. I love the DE2. S060 pulling a couple cars of steel tubes down the high speed straightaway of the Derail Valley map. I think the S060 is my current favorite locomotive? It's a huge pain in the ass to refill/refuel and has a horrifyingly short range, but I love the experience of driving it. I really hope they eventually add something that's basically a small steam engine of the same size but with a proper tender.

HAPPENING NOW 🚨📢🌿 Early this morning a land defender climbed into a giant cedar tree that was set to be cut down later today. A crew snuck undetected past 10km of exclusion zones, patrol cars and police checkpoints to set up this tree sit which now protects the last few ancient cedars in the upper walbran clear cut. Rings on the adjacent stump place these twin cedars around 600 years old. Make that 600 years and 1 day. There is now a new active tree sit in the upper Walbran Valley. As of last night a total of 26 people have now been arrested trying to prevent continued old growth logging. Stay posted! I worked in Silicon Valley during the Dot-Bomb collapse. I could drive 101 from San Jose to Palo Alto and only see 3 or 4 cars on the way. I know scores of families that were destroyed when their stock-option pay became worthless... but was still taxed at full value. Good times.
