Besides forgetting these blurs, I also almost forget how challenging it was to find new models ten years ago. At the time I didn't even realize that "art models" were a thing that existed and was inviting friends, strangers and random hookers from Craigslist to come shoot. The result was as flaky and shambolic as you might expect. But it had some upsides. One of the first responders to a Craigslist ad agreed to meet me at the restaurant across from my studio space. I was SO very new to this game and so very taken aback to have a girl in a wheelchair come rolling in. A lot of things went through my mind. Most pressingly, how the hell were we going to deal with the stairs to my space? I wasn't exactly ADA-compliant. And WHAT were we going to do? How was this going to work? We talked for a bit and I heard myself say something like "well, let's find out how we're going to do this!" in a cheerful voice and we rolled across the street. I don't know if this is going to sound insensitive or stupid but the thing I kept thinking was that I had better do a good job figuring this out because this gal had WAY bigger balls than I think I might under a similar circumstance. I've run into a few situations like this now and it turns out that the trick is simply to pull up your big boy pants (metaphorically - don't take them off in the first place!) and find a path between treating them like anybody else and asking the obvious honest questions, like "how are we gonna do stairs?" She had an idea. She dragged herself up 'em. I was impressed and carried the chair. I did have SOME relevant experience to this awkwardness. Back in high school I took a radio broadcasting course that drew from the entire district. Part of our course was spending a shift on-air and I promptly volunteered for the last shift on Friday, 6pm - 8pm. That shift came with a set of keys to lock the place up. Or....open it? Nobody else seemed to want to ruin their Friday night playing "Ebony and Ivory" or whatever hit we had from Huey Lewis & The News so I spent every Friday night of my senior year closing down the station at 8pm and then smoking dope in the parking lot for two hours until I figured anyone who might care would be asleep and UN-closing the station and loading in my personal collection of punk, Euro-disco and the fledgling underground metal scene. We could be heard all over the Seattle area. I gave out the phone number to take callers and PEOPLE ACTUALLY CALLED. People, as it turned out, included girls. A lot of them. There was a lot of flirting on the radio. I had never heard of Howard Stern and Christian Slater wouldn't make "Pump Up The Volume" until several years later so as far as I was concerned I was the most brilliant teenager EVER. Eventually I picked up a regular caller, a gal who would call and talk dirty/witty/funny as long as I wanted to stay on the air. I was 16 and I was dying to meet this wild thing. She had a husky laugh and told me she was 18 and she loved radio and loved what I was doing. But she wouldn't agree to meet in person. But she kept calling back. Eventually she said yes but it came with warnings. I wasn't going to like her. I would run. She hinted at extreme problems, ugliness, curses. I possessed the unbreakable optimism of a young suburbanite who had never experienced anything more annoying than an ill-timed pimple. My own Worst Date Ever was still more than a year away. How bad could it be? It couldn't be that bad -- she was funny, smart, dirty.... It will come as no surprise to learn that you should probably take people at their word. My anonymous caller turned out to be the first person I ever met, certainly of my own age, in a wheelchair. And there was a LOT going on. Dwarfism? Definitely bone deformities. And she expected me to run. I think I'd have a very different view of myself if I had to live with running from that date. I don't remember enough of it to have any real understanding of whether I did OK or not but we went to dinner and a movie and hung out for a while afterward and talked. She told me a lot of stuff and we sat in a park overlooking Elliott Bay, at the north end of the Market, and I focused on her voice, which was husky and smart and funny. I'm probably no more prepared now than then to deal with that interaction but I knew that I had to show the respect and care that she deserved for showing up in the first place. She had bigger balls than I thought I would have. She deserved my time and effort to be the best person I could be. And so too did the gal who answered my Craigslist ad. I honestly don't know WTF to think but it seems like the starting point is to give somebody who shows that kind of bravery the respect of doing a good job and not being an ass. So off we went and she had beautiful eyes and we were slow and it was funny and we laughed at ourselves and figured out how to do it. That might have been my second or third shoot with someone I didn't already know and it really changed what I thought photography could be and how I was going to interact with people. Wherever she is, I'm sending a smile and a bit of thanks her way.

Beginning in 1943, the War Dept published a series of pamphlets for U.S. Army personnel in the European theater of World War II. In 1945, one of them described what fascism looks like & what we need to do to combat it.
Fascism, the U.S. government document explained, “is government by the few and for the few. The objective is seizure and control of the economic, political, social, and cultural life of the state.” “The people run democratic governments, but fascist governments run the people.” “The basic principles of democracy stand in the way of their desires; hence—democracy must go! Anyone who is not a member of their inner gang has to do what he’s told. Part of that effort to divide and conquer would be a “well-planned ‘hate campaign’ against minority races, religions, and other groups.” Second, they would deny any need for international cooperation, because that would fly in the face of their insistence that their supporters were better than everyone else. “In place of international cooperation, the fascists seek to substitute a perverted sort of ultra-nationalism which tells their people that they are the only people in the world who count. With this goes hatred and suspicion toward the people of all other nations.” Third, fascists would insist that “the world has but two choices—either fascism or communism, and they label as ‘communists’ everyone who refuses to support them.”

That commitment to our guests, to each other, and to the experience we create together, hasn’t changed. As the entertainment landscape shifts around us, we’re making thoughtful and necessary updates to our service model to ensure Alamo remains strong, sustainable, and true to who we are. We’re proud to share that our newly launched, custom-built dark-screen QR mobile ordering system is already delivering strong results with positive guest and teammate feedback, and we will be expanding upon it. As you know, the system allows guests to browse the menu, order and pay directly from their phones, all while reducing distractions in the auditorium. Beginning in February, we will expand the mobile ordering system system to replace the traditional pen-and-paper ordering, call button, and check drop while fully preserving our no talking, no texting policy during the movie. Food and drinks will be ordered exclusively via QR, rather than Guest Attendants, both prior to and during the film, and will continue to be delivered directly to guests’ seats. These updates will help us operate more efficiently while protecting what makes Alamo special: a truly immersive moviegoing experience with as few distractions as possible. What this means for venue teammates As part of this evolution, we’ll be updating venue roles and workflows to support our teams and how we run our venues. is ai going to take my job? you cannot, in any way that matters, have an artificial intelligence system that completely replaces a human worker. humanity is an infinite machine of reconfiguration, exploration, and learning. there's a difference between your job and your work. ai will almost certainly automate away many work tasks that you currently do. this is a good thing. what is the productive value of my time finding receipts in my inbox and attaching them to an expense report? what is the productive value of my time trying to find one-off answers to questions that i'll never ask again? this is not a new story. when i was small, my mother worked at a newspaper. i still have a core memory of watching the paper get made; the industry was still in the transitory phase of computerization. stories would be written on a computer, sent to someone to format and print out on paper, and someone else would take all of those printed out stories, and ads, and other copy and lay it out onto a page using this cool little machine that made things sticky. those pages were then turned into plates which were put onto a big news printing machine.

I can't just buy a licence once, I can't just install the software and have it work, it doesn't just sit there and do its thing without trying to talk to OneDrive and Copilot and whatever else, it hasn't innovated in a helpful way.
