That depends entirely on your behaviour with respect to whelks.

Terrible news for hard corals, & anything (snails, whelks, barnacles, mussels, clams, scallops, oysters, crabs, lobsters etc) that makes a shell... & for anything that eats them, relies on them to clean pollutants from water or uses them for shelter...

Which *also means* terrible news for humans.

Why'd they not write a whelk pun for whelks in animal crossing, it's "happy snails to ya" should be something like "whelk-come to my pockets"

I like it. Jars of whelks, pickled onions and pickled eggs as there should be. Points off for the kebab spit. They should concentrate on chips.

What could explain Shane Jones caring about protecting marine life from exploitation?

Ah, well, you see, here there's a racism angle. And there's no commercial interest to upset.

(Yes I know it says "immigrants" but I don't think nostalgic Cockneys seeking whelks are what Jones has in mind […]

Oh look, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment in South Africa has confirmed that large numbers of dead white mussels, whelks and other shellfish have washed up at St Helena Bay and Elandsbaai last week.

Husband I hit the beach before sunrise this morning. We collected a lot of sea urchin fossils, which I'll show later.

Here are some of the shells we brought back for the succulent garden. Time for a nap. 😴

Of widows and whelks

If another church bell wakes me before the sun itself has bothered to clock in for work, I may commit a historical inaccuracy on purpose just to spite the century.

I personally wouldn't eat bugs (or garlic and butter lathered escargot, but I WILL eat whelks), but it doesn't mean cultures with entomophagy are of less value than mine or some Westerner's. These journalists on TV are just very pasty about it.

The Nigerian princes look forward to showering you with wealth.

Or maybe whelks. What do I know?

A man in 1835 was digging a duck pond and accidentally uncovered a 70-foot tunnel made of 2,000 sq ft of mosaic made from 4.6 million shells (mussels, cockles, whelks, limpets, oysters, scallops).

It's the Shell Grotto in Margate, Kent, England.

They taste fantastic. Percebes, anyway, I wouldn't eat the barnacles that grow on ships' hulls. On Madeira, I tried limpets, a local thing. Worse than whelks, really chewy, like eating gristle. No. But the local deep-sea fish, espada, is INCREDIBLE.

No I’m pretty sure human beings are slightly more intelligent than whelks.

Today's #birdoftheday set by @robcrank68.bsky.social is #BirdButts.
Common eider diving for whelks and sea urchins (both of which they swallow whole 😮).

I like the wing tips just showing.
