I've never sussed out the use of Nordic poles. When I walked Hadrian's Wall with a friend in 2019 she used Nordic poles. She'd be striding up rugged hills & down precipitous peaks without a care in the world whilst I'd be crawling up inclines & descending on my bum. 🤣 Part of our route:

The beautiful cover art for a tourist booklet, Tynedale and the Roman Wall, produced by British Railways (the Railway Executive N.E. Region) in 1950.
It lies on a copy of the 1964 edition of the OS map of Hadrian’s Wall.

I hiked Hadrian's Wall a couple of years ago and my favorite fact I learned is that the reason the wall is most visible in the most remote places (e.g. on top of the Great Whin Sill) is that it was too annoying for post-Roman folks to hike up there and pull stones off of it to make houses out of.

Housesteads was a #Roman auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall, at Housesteads, Northumberland. It is dramatically positioned on the end of the mile-long crag of the Whin Sill over which the Wall runs, overlooking sparsely populated hills.

Known in Latin as Vercovicium (also spelled Borcovicus, Borcovicium), Housesteads is an auxiliary Roman fort on Hadrian’s Wall, perched on the Whin Sill escarpment in Northumberland, England. #housteadsromanfort #houseteads #hadrianswall #romanbritain #englishheritage #nationaltrust #northumberland

Daniel, delighted to see Wallstown Crag on Hadrian's Wall, one of its most dramatic viewpoints where the volcanic rock edge plunges into the landscape along the crags of the Whin Sill. You'll find it between Birdoswald & Housesteads Forts which makes for a great day's hiking. #HillwalkTours #England

I found out recently that High Force is part of the Great Whin Sill geological feature that Hadrian’s Wall runs along so picturesquely near Vindolanda. Apologies if you already knew that

Hadrian’s Wall, built AD122 during the Roman occupation of Britain. The wall is to the right, the cliffs to the left are the Whin Sill, formed by magma intruding along sedimentary beds approx 300 million years ago. The Romans used this natural cliff as a foundation for the Roman wall. Awesome!

Lilburn Tower at Dunstanburgh Castle, on the Northumberland coast in North East England. Beyond lies Embleton Bay and Low Newton by-the-Sea. Construction of the castle, on an outcrop of the Great Whin Sill, began in AD1313.

I suppose the pinnacle of my walking adventures was Hadrian's Wall in 2019 - it took me years to find someone mad enough to go with me! Was a wonderful experience. I love this pic I took when we arrived at Steel Rigg (& later edited to show route for ascent) which took us up onto the Whin Sill.

High Force, Teesdale. Biggest waterfall by volume in Britain. The lip is created by the basalt of the Great Whin Sill, overlying Carboniferous sandstone and limestone.

Guinevere's dialect. Whin is gorse. It's "probably Scandinavian"..compare Swedish hven & early Danish hvine. It's also in one of my favourite place names....Friars Goose which I'll post. Whin is also a hard stone....as in the sill, but here I'm talking about gorse.

Our Northumbrian cottage is built on an outcropping of the Whin Sill - can’t get a more solid foundation than it.

Two years ago, on a trip based around my father's funeral we did make sure to spend some fun times.

High Force (pictured), Low Force and Stanhope was a very full day.

Did this wall create the idea of Scotland and England? Or was that already there? Or did it come later?

Is it a brutal imposition on the landscape? An adornment to the crags of the Whin Sill?

I let all that swim in and out of focus while I admired its survival and how damn steep it is.
