Thought about history/perspectives on BW being home/doing communal care work (compared to working for yts)…but during CRM “domestic workers became central to the movement’s success.”

Care work is racialized and gendered, why some ppl downplay its role in movements vs. protest, hypervisible roles.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

As a photographer, I am most interested in the art of observation, not so much the art of photography. I enjoy immersing myself in the tones and textures of life, not in the passing judgement of it. There is a glaring difference between "seeing" and just looking at the world. So much in today's society seems to conspire against our innate human gift for "seeing". By learning the art of observation, the people, places and events we encounter in the world, it makes us better communicators, storytellers, artists, music makers, writers, thinkers, and yes, photographers. Many of us have become too accustomed, too numbed, and predisposed to merely just looking at things and beings - often through the viewfinder of stereotypes and microscopes, absorbed and hooked on TV and computer screens - the less we "see", the more numb we become to the joys and also the pains of being alive, and the further estranged we become from ourselves and others.

The Steve McQueen exhibition, Resistance: How Protest Shaped Britain And Photography Shaped Protest, currently on at Modern Two is illuminating, brilliant and beautiful. I'm drawn to joy as resistance
In 1959, activist and journalist Claudia Jones organised the first Caribbean Carnival at St Pancras Town Hall - a defiant celebration in response to racist violence, including the murder of carpenter Kelso Cochrane in Notting Hill. As founder of the West Indian Gazette, Jones understood that joy could be a form of resistance. Her indoor carnival, featuring steel bands, calypso and masquerade, was a cultural celebration and a powerful platform for political solidarity. Despite ongoing tensions through the decades, the spirit of her carnival lives on in today's Notting Hill Carnival, where Caribbean culture proudly asserts its place in British life. An unknown photographer captured a couple dancing with only eyes for each other. They are surrounded by other people dressed up to the nines.
