"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

this is a staggering amount of money to build camps—suggesting that building & running a gulag will be the primary function of the otherwise gutted Trump-state

Trump Administration Aims to Spend $45 Billion to Expand Immigrant Detention
A request for proposals for new detention facilities and other services would allow the government to expedite the contracting process and rapidly expand detention.

Users of the tigris / tidycensus #rstats packages:

The Census website has been blocking requests from tigris (and curl) since yesterday.

(Don’t worry, the datasets are still there!)

I’ve patched tigris, install with `pak::pak("walkerke/tigris@ftp-patch")` and everything should work.

The photo at the right is actually the more hopeful one, because it was taken after liberation.
Screengrab of a selfie video recorded by US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, in front of barracks in CECOT, a forced-labor prison in El Salvador, from which the country's totalitarian president has promised no one will ever be freed, and to which the Trump administration has deported Venezuelan refugees who had been granted asylum by the United States. Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.

More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.

I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

Take it from people inside #NIH:

If we don’t shut the government down now and instead accept this horrible Republican CR, NIH will be dead.

Forget the budget, the study sections, the councils: Trump and Musk will just cancel your grants as they did to Columbia. 🧪

This is a lie. Social Security is even more efficient than the private sector. It's a political tool they're wielding to destroy Social Security. "Fraud, waste, and abuse has become the rallying cry for Elon Musk’s dismantling of the federal government." donmoynihan.substack.com/p/musks-frau...
The reality is that ‘fraud’ is almost non-existent in Social Security. An examination of data from 2015 to 2021 shows that after accounting for overpayments and underpayments, and the recovery of overpayments, the loss rate is around .001%. As a point of comparison, the 2021 average retail shrink in the private sector, due to administrative errors, vendor fraud, shoplifting, and return fraud, was 1.44%.

This is a war on science, an illegal attack on functioning government, and it is racism. Real students, current and future research professionals -- working on the pressing issues of the day, for government and society -- which any functioning modern democracy needs, having their careers cut off.

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

US military budget: $850 billion

US National Institutes of Health indirect costs: $9 billion

That they are so focused on cutting the budget of the latter says everything.
