I’m so struck by this video. A regular day in Logan Square in front of a grocery store and ICE pulls up and tear gassed people. Funston Elementary School is right across the street as well. This is a major corridor in Logan Sq. No concern for human safety

Anyway, again, it would take like 20 or 30 Republicans in Congress who decide they don't actually hate the country to stop a whole lot of this

Meanwhile, today in official university-mandated "research security" training:
Slide from research security training. The header is "Impartiality and Objectivity." The text is "Scientists conduct their work without bias or preconceived notions, allowing the to approach their research objectively."

I teach computer science students. Many of them come in believing that quant analysis is "real" and qual is "made up." I consider it a big win if I can convince them, by the end, that it's all equally made up. (And that's OK!)

I spend all semester in my research methods class trying to teach the grad students that there are no "right" answers, that all data is inherently subjective, that what we choose to measure and how we choose to measure it are just as (if not more) important than what the measurements say.

i love this part and i think it very much shows the difference in depth of thinking between someone like Klein, desperately fighting in the here-and-now and arguing to win a battle with compromise, versus Coates' position that he is a soldier in a long war.

However, ultimately, all of the technical/digital solutions outlined in the article are but band-aids. The only real, lasting, and just solution is a return to the rule of law.

this is something you just have to live with if you are even barely well-known online; people make up elaborate stories about you in their heads. it will always happen and you cannot give a shit about it, only stomp on it if they try to spread these weird tales to anybody you actually know.

its so strange to be a public figure. people build such elaborate mythologies around you. and im not even like, famous famous

I don’t think any country in the history of the world has ever done anything as stupidly self destructive as what Trump and RFK jr are doing with vaccines.

TFW when you are listening to @ifbookspod.bsky.social and there's a great segment on replication problems and cherry-picking data ("I'm going to add this to the resource list for my methods class!") immediately followed by a joke about anal sex ("Or maybe not").

The U.S.’s largest estuary is showing signs of revival. Once written off as a dead zone, water clarity in Chesapeake Bay has improved, underwater grasses are expanding, and crab populations are steadier thanks to decades of pollution controls. Nature buff.ly/morNFth

Reviving the Old Bay
To undo centuries of damage in the Chesapeake Bay, six states are fixing forests, farms, city runoff, wetlands, rivers and oyster reefs across this massive watershed.

California and Florida are on opposite ends of the school-closure spectrum and the differences in test scores are a wash.

Some individual schools and districts definitely stayed closed too long but it just isn’t the case that this is some huge, obvious, foreseeable blunder.
Neither Florida nor California saw a statistically significant change in 4th-grade reading performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress between 2019 and 2022.
Meanwhile, Florida's 8th graders performed worse on the reading exam in 2022 than in 2019, while California's 8th graders' performance was unchanged. Both states performed worse on the 4th- and 8th-grade math assessments in 2022 than in 2019
Despite their states' similar performance on
NAEP, which places both states above the majority of the rest of the country, the two governors accused each other of overseeing some of the worst learning loss in the country.

As L.A. was a couple of months ago, D.C. is merely an excuse for Trump to continue normalizing the use of federal law enforcement and the U.S. military to police Democratic cities. The implications for local self-government, civil liberties, and the 2026 and 2028 elections are obvious and ominous.

The way that I was raised, being Jewish meant believing that every human life was sacred; to save a single human life meant saving all of humanity. That no law or ritual was more important than saving a single human life.

It's unfathomable that any Jew can accept what Israel is doing in Gaza.

According to Consumer Affairs, the DC area has dethroned Los Angeles for having the worst traffic in the nation. They say the DMV's average commute time is now 33.4 minutes vs. 30.5 in Los Angeles. In 2024 DC was number 2.
