The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

At its peak, about 1 in 7 deaths in sub-Saharan Africa caused by HIV/AIDS. It is now one in 20. PEPFAR takes a lot of credit. Since the launch of PMI in 2005, death rates from malaria in sub-Saharan Africa are down by a third. This is the time to double down, not walk away.

The reality is that the US Department of Homeland Security has been openly seized by unapologetic white nationalists who freely indulge in neo-Nazi rhetoric and use their huge and growing paramilitary army to mount massive attacks on communities of color in the US in a campaign of racist oppression

I found this rove beetle friend on the rainforest floor. They are so so fast, you can imaging me chasing it around with my camera just rolling around in the leaf litter. Just unbelievable colors. In person the rainbow iridescence is stunning. It’s hard to say much here beyond just wow.

There were several nice bursts last night. The first was around 930pm (what an early treat!). This is another bigger one about 125am. This timelapse covers about 5 minutes of time.

US GEOG majors declined by almost 50% over the past 10 years 😢. Environment is doing well, though, and Data Science is through the roof. You will be surprised to learn that we are working on a new BS in Geospatial Data Science at UNC 🙃.

Ten-year changes in majors by field -- when I first made this for the American Historical Association in 2018, history had the bottom slot, so slightly nice to see that it's rising.
A chart "Change in degrees, 2014-2024", with increases for Statistics and Computer science, and steep drops for most humanities and humanistic social sciences.

NSF GRFP is out 2.5 months late w/key changes

1. 2nd year graduate students not eligible.

2. "alignment with Administration priorities"

3. Unlike prior years, they DO NOT specify the expected number of awards... that is a BIG problem.

new GRFP solicitation says "Individuals enrolled in graduate degree programs can apply only once, in the first year of their first graduate program" - does this mean 2nd year students who didn't not apply last year are now ineligible?

The US Administration is moving to severely restrict lawful, high-skill immigration.

First H-1B visas.

Next comes barring int'l students from staying to offer their talents to the US after graduation.
