The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

This is not about politics. It's about people.

Let’s break it down:

It's one thing to be politically divided into red states and blue states. We are now being militarily divided into red states and blue states. It's crossing the Rubicon, a bright-red flashing warning that the constitutional order is coming unglued, in a way that will have monumental consequences. /x

To reiterate: this wasn't done even at the height of the civil rights era and massive resistance, when no doubt the bulk of those state's Guard units were themselves racists and segregationists. But they weren't treated as disloyal. There was no notion they would refuse the president's orders.

Photo of a Kansas City Chiefs press conference with Andy Reid, Travis Kelce, and Patrick Mahomes. Reid is wearing a gray suit and red tie with a lapel pin. Kelce is wearing a camp-style short-sleeved shirt with a bird print, along with a suede cap, and Mahomes is wearing a white collared shirt, a pink checkered double-breasted vest, and a pale pink tie.

The DFAT reports contain allegations of prison guards kicking and slapping the detainees, using "sleep deprivation" techniques, and confiscating medication. Others said they were not physically abused but "humiliated", with one claiming he was told to "dance like a monkey".

Seven Australian activists arrested while trying to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza have been deported to Jordan, the ABC understands.

the first sounds plausible to me though I'm maybe not quite that pessimistic about it, but agree on the second point
olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social
imo the best route to that involves the dissolution rather than rehabilitation of the GOP

yeah it's not obviously a policy (as opposed to the outcome of very many policies) but the two party system itself is a political reality that serves the interests of "both sides" of the aisle and, until recently, both sides vocally acknowledged as much

A decade ago, I lived on a rough estate in Salford. One of the houses on the street behind mine was given to a black family by the council. They then suffered weeks of vandalism, abuse, & threats.

fwiw, I wholeheartedly agree. Those taking the "It's not yet fascism here" line are, in a narrow and technical sense, correct, but the point isn't "OK, we're good then" but "OK, but what will keep it that way? In what ways do we reverse the trend toward an (as yet) unfinished project"?
olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social
right, the first part of what you're saying here is exactly what this thread is about
nromanek.bsky.social
Yeah, when we think of the fascists as efficient, orderly, and hyperdisciplined, what we're remembering is the propanganda they produced themselves.
olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social
right, but "the present GOP is good and worth cooperating with" is not the sense in which this statement is bipartisan
