A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

Right... I suspect that's what they intended. GPT and other LLM/LMMs can make rudimentary maps (at best, currently) but the idea that generative AI has replaced maps is wishcasting.

Not many in Geog in the US though. And I always tell grads to definitely not plan on doing it the weird way I did! Your point re: new folks not fixating so much on their first destination is spot on. It's hard to drive home that you really can't expect the first gig to be perfect in all aspects.

I got a permanent job where I did my PhD, but you're right, it's not usually a thing in US Geog depts, and you have to get used to people saying terrible stuff to you when they find out. Makes it a bit weird for me to give advice to my students about job stuff, so this series in GLaD is great!
