Look at this gorgeous cover for Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine!! Thanks to Ian Williams for giving us permission to use his image on the cover, which captures brilliantly the concept & structure of the book. Briana Martino (@briwok.bsky.social) & I are grateful & thrilled!

Book cover for Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine edited by Lisa Diedrich and Briana Martino. The image on the cover is from Ian Williams, & is a version of an image from his book The Bad Doctor, a graphic narrative based on his own experience with OCD. A boy is in bed with his hands folded in prayer & his thoughts take the form of a sefirot surrounding his head.

I have been writing about Euripides’ The Bacchae for my new book on Wine & Women. It speaks to my lifelong curiosity about orgiastic violence, the gods, female resistance, & wine. I have seen other productions i.e. the Epidaurus Theatre, so can't wait to watch the new National Theatre production.

📚 New faculty book alert! In Birth Politics, Ogechukwu E. Williams examines childbirth in Nigeria from the colonial era to the present to consider the complex relationships between traditional midwives, biomedical maternities & faith-based birthing homes. @hopkinspress.bsky.social #ubuffalo #histmed

Some of you will know that I am writing a book on 'Wine and Women' (a celebration, not misery lit!). I just heard that the 'bar suffragette' Merle Thornton died, aged 93. I wish I had met her. See why: www.joannabourke.com/blog

'Even when women were mentioned, the report found they were more often victims than protagonists, with the women murdered by Jack the Ripper more likely to be taught in lessons than the female code breakers at Bletchley Park during the second world war 1/2
School history lessons minimise the role of women, report finds

Outraged that UC Berkeley is pursuing allegations of antisemitism against Judith Butler & 160 others, initiated by the Republican administration. Butler has been open about their critique of the policies of the state of Israel but has always fought against racism & antisemitism. Shame on you.

I fear the parallels with McCarthyism underplay the risks. Having recently finished reading Harald Jahner’s excellent Vertigo: The Rise and Fall of Weimar Germany, the echos of 1930s Germany are more chilling.

Looking forward to reading this memoir. I have never met Raewyn Connell but hold her in high regard.

A nice article about friend and colleague Raewyn Connell in the SMH, including foreshadowing her new trans memoir. Pleased to see she's delivering this year's Ted Wheelwright lecture in political economy at Sydney University - one of the few universities to maintain political economy and Marxism.
Raewyn’s groundbreaking work changed how we think about men. Its origins were deeply personal
Raewyn Connell has a global reputation and is speaking at an event marking one of the PM’s intellectual influences.

This is being promoted by the EHRC?! Shocking, but can't say I am surprised. This must be resisted. I remember the solidarity of the T in LGBTQ+ during the marches for reproductive rights, equality, etc. Anti-trans policies hurt all of us.

Just returned from a tour of the wines of the Peloponnese region, Greece. My top recommendation is the Seméli estate. Their Thea Mantinia (100% Moschofilero) & Nemea Grande Reserve (100% Agiorgitiko) are incredible and complex. This estate is a 'must visit' for all lovers of wine and elegance.
