Ohhhh Molly Crockett‘s @mjcrockett.bsky.social keynote talk at #FAccT2025 was soo good 🔥🔥🔥

She talked about how techno-optimism is really human pessimism, how DEAD benchmarks don’t capture full human capacities and feed the hype cycle, how we need to avoid monoculture & imagine new worlds together

Now out in Nature: we analyzed 19,000 computer vision papers and the 20,000+ patents citing them and found that most CV papers are used in surveillance enabling CV patents. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

A bit of a mess around the conflict of COLM with the ARR (and to lesser degree ICML) reviews release. We feel this is creating a lot of pressure and uncertainty. So, we are pushing our deadlines:

Abstracts due March 22 AoE (+48hr)
Full papers due March 28 AoE (+24hr)

Plz RT 🙏

When DEOHS faculty Dr. Gary Franklin asked a chatbot for info on outcomes of a specific medical procedure, the bot gave an answer that cited two medical studies, neither of which existed. There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research.

I appreciated the callout that half the community is based in China and travel to places like the US can be quite difficult. Now, the other half gets to experience the annoyance of visas :’)

(3/n) Bingbing Wen will present “Characterizing LLM Abstention Behavior in Science QA with Context Perturbations” arxiv.org/abs/2404.12452
We assess model ability to abstain w/ insufficient or incorrect context. Counter-intuitively, adding irrelevant context can sometimes increase task performance!
The framework of our context perturbation framework for studying abstention of LLMs in science QA. An example question is given: “Do they evaluate which compression method yields the most gains?” Four context perturbations are shown: (1) the original context which is illustrated as a highlighted paragraph from the paper, (2) no context, where the context paragraph is removed, (3) random context, where a random paragraph from a different paper is sampled, and (4) noisy context, where the random paragraph is appended to the given context. An arrow connects the context perturbations to the stage “Prompting LLMs,” and the image shows possible outputs and whether they are considered correct in that setting. For example, if the answer is Yes and the model answers Yes, in the given context or noisy context settings, it is correct. However, the model should abstain from answering in the no context and random context settings.

(2/n) Yue Guo, now faculty at UIUC, will present “APPLS: Evaluating Evaluation Metrics for Plain Language Summarization” arxiv.org/abs/2305.14341

We introduce a granular meta-evaluation testbed for medical PLS, and evaluate 14 metrics including automated scores, lexical features, and LLM prompting
A schematic of the APPLS testbed. Left side of diagram shows candidate summaries being extracted from plain language summarization datasets. Right side of diagram shows how these candidate summaries are used in the APPLS testbed. A list shows features of APPLS including criteria-specific design, simulate real-world situation, and controlled perturbation. Below that is a line plot showing different trends corresponding to hypothetical metrics, some of which increase or decrease relative to perturbation percentage.
