Hidden in the lungs of some breast cancer survivors are tumor cells that can remain dormant for decades — until they one day trigger a relapse.

Now, experiments show for the first time these rogue cells can be roused from their slumber by common respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 or the flu.
‘Sleeping’ cancer cells in the lungs can be roused by COVID and flu
Inflammation from the respiratory infections seems to be the culprit, study in mice finds.

I can confirm the PBS Passport is a very good deal for $5/month or $2.50/month if you do yearly.

Thousands of hours of top notch content. NOVA is great. The new Ken Burns doc on Leonardo da Vinci is excellent.

You can sign up at the link below!

I hear you 😉 We found a type of clot-causing neutrophils in cancer. By blocking tumor vessels, they drive tumor necrosis, which in turn cause metastasis. Key message: Necrosis can be an active process and necrosis can cause metastasis. Free link to article here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Check out some #CoolScienceImages (with music by Victor Leksell) from a @nature.com paper. In the study, @adrover.bsky.social, @megeblad.bsky.social, et al. found that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) drive tumor necrosis and metastasis: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Exciting new work at @nature.com showing that Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in the vasculature can actively promote necrosis in cancer and that targeting NETs is can reduce necrosis and metastasis. Great work from @adrover.bsky.social @megeblad.bsky.social

I’m happy to share our latest work on tumour necrosis! During my time in the @megeblad.bsky.social lab, we found that tumour necrosis is not a passive phenomenon secondary to tumour growth, but an active phenomenon driven by neutrophils and NETs! Thread below: (1/13)
