UCD Institute of Criminology and Criminal JusticeCriminology Salon: Parole Futures: Rationalities, Institutions and PracticesMonday 20 October 2025, 13:00 – 14:30 Harty Boardroom, Sutherland School of Law, Belfield, Dublin 4 Professor Nicola Carr, Chair of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College DublinJoin us at our next Criminology Salon where Professor Nicola Carr will discuss her recent book co-edited with Harry Annison and Thomas Guiney, Parole Futures: Rationalities, Institutions and Practices, published by Bloomsbury. This book brings together a range of academic and practice perspectives to analyse the ideas, institutions and practices of contemporary parole. At a time when many parole systems are strained, this collection aims to encourage systematic reflection on parole’s rationalities, institutions, and practices and to pose ambitious “what if” questions about the possible futures of parole and prison release.

Many shocking things about the last 24 hours; but the contrast between the Labour government’s response to peaceful protest against genocide, and its non-response to violent racist protest against liberal democracy, is high on the list.

The government should have left X after the riots last year. It must do now.

Can anyone explain why the Government is still doing most of its communications through a website whose owner is now openly rallying the far right to trigger a violent insurrection on our streets?

David Lammy is the new Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister. #reshuffle #Probation #Prison #Criminology

The average tenure of a Justice Secretary in UK Government continues to be ~12-14 months. Lammy is the 12th Justice Secretary in the period since 2015 (* Raab had two turns in that period)

This factsheet accompanying the Sentencing Bill in England and Wales contains really concerning plans to publish the names and photos of people undertaking unpaid work. This is a punitive and retrograde step. More invidiously practitioners are supposed to arbitrate whose details are published.

Significant intervention from some of NI's leading civil society groups working on rights and peacebuilding in response to today's Policy Exchange report claiming that the GFA does not restrict the UK's from withdrawing from the ECHR and on the importance of the ECHR for NI:
cajni.bsky.social
The ECHR is deeply embedded within the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. This commitment does not allow the UK Government to formulate some version of what it regards as ECHR-equivalent protections.

Important information for anyone attending the European Society of Criminology in Athens and for members of ESC. Petition outlines serious concerns. Consider what you can do to support 👇👇 👇#eurocrim

ESC colleagues: petition & important vote at the General Assembly. If not boycotting, vote. Or a 3rd option: use presentation time to discuss complicity and promote attendance at the GE?

I'm scheduled to present on asylum seekers & everyday resistance. It would be unethical if I didn't resist too

... and if you still intend to attend, get behind the motion to be discussed and voted on at the General Assembly of the 25th Eurocrim Annual Conference, on 05.09.2025 at 13:00
