“We basically have three choices: mitigation, adaptation and suffering. We’re going to do some of each. The question is what the mix is going to be. The more mitigation [(reduction of emissions)] we do, the less adaptation will be required and the less suffering there will be.”—Dr John Holdren, 2007

As the Senate considers voting to approve Trump's devastating funding cuts to public broadcasting, listen to the words of LeVar Burton.

The Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121.

Contact your senators today and urge them to oppose these cuts.

For diversity to science to foreign policy, Trump has moved aggressively to reopen long-settled issues and dismantle long-established institutions. At times, it seems like he's trying to repeal much of the 20th century. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/13/u...

Yesterday's Supreme Court decision on nationwide injunctions is one of the worst of 2025 so far.

Yet, these tools still exist:

1️⃣ More class-action lawsuits
2️⃣ More plaintiffs joining
3️⃣ Faster final judgements on the merits
4️⃣ Arguments about "complete relief"

🧵 Using science funding as example...

BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

Genetic material shed by tumors can be detected in the bloodstream three years before cancer diagnosis, according to a study led by investigators at Johns Hopkins University.

That study was made possible with federal funding. Now, many studies like this are canceled. hub.jhu.edu/2025/06/04/...

The overall budget level ($9B --> $4B) has not been this low since 1983, adjusted for inflation.

What's new today:

⚖️ Attempting to close programs mandated by law

🐘 Even hurting red, historically underfunded states

📚 75% slash to STEM ed

👩‍🔬 Harms to early-career

Historian here presidential pardon is in the Constitution but the founders did not imagine they could be solicited through bribes or upend the rule of law. My take here.https://www.wfsb.com/2025/05/28/former-connecticut-governor-john-rowland-receives-pardon-by-president-trump/

Booya! Breaking update:

Looks like a federal judge will further halt destruction and firings at NSF, HHS, HUD, EPA, Energy, etc. (previous halt was set to expire tomorrow)

Says the evidence strongly suggests "the recent actions of the executive branch usurp the constitutional powers of Congress"

🧪 Detailed data viz NYT article, out today, on the extent of funding cuts at the National Science Foundation.

This "broken pie chart" is neat & new to me: Powerfully shows the slowdown in new NSF awards across areas.
