So now the Administration are saying that the mass firing of CDC scientists, including many responsible for preventing outbreaks, was an “error” and many will be brought back.

Whether by intention or incompetence, dismantling public health will kill people.

SEE THE FASCISM — ACT AGAINST IT.
eladn.bsky.social
Some folks can't see the fascism, and so they have false optimism that causes them not to act against it.

Other folks see the fascism, and they feel so hopeless that they don't act against it.

What we need is a combination of the ability to see things honestly as well as to be empowered.

This annual lecture is held in memory of Dr. George Carmody, a cherished member of Carleton's Biology Dept.

We share the belief that the arts and sciences together are crucial to understand the world, along with a commitment to support early career professionals.

I feel honoured to give this talk.

It seems there are two main reasons things haven’t gone completely to shit in the US: 1. Lawyers and the courts; 2. Journalists and the media. Most of us can’t do anything about the first, but we can support journalism. Stop complaining about paywalls and subscribe to news & donate to public media.

"Research shows wildfires are 4x more likely in areas w/roads than in roadless forests...and >90% of wildfires occur within 1/2 mile of a road. I want to explain this a bit b/c it’s important. When the Building Canada Act (then C-5) was introduced, it required the feds to consult w/ the provinces re: PONIs (s 5(7)). But the Act was amended at 3rd reading by the Transportation Committee. Section 5(1.1) was added by the Bloc Québécois. 1/n

Reminder that Bill C-5 REQUIRES consent of the province or territory in which the project is to be built. I doubt BC will be onboard with this pipeline proposal.

H/t to @molszyns.bsky.social for this tidbit.

Publication and consent of province or territory
(1.‍1) Before adding the name of a project to Schedule 1, the Governor in Council must cause a notice of 30 days, that includes the name and description of the project, to be published in the Canada Gazette and must consult with the government of the province or territory in which the project will be carried out, and obtain its written consent if the project falls within areas of exclusive provincial or territorial jurisdiction.

Hey, so...Covid rates have gotten real high. Maybe change your behavior to fit this new risk profile? Stop eating indoors at restaurants, mask on mass transit, that kind of thing?
A graph of Covid rates. It's more complex than can be described here, but the important bit is that the rates have gone up a lot since late July, nearly to the heights of last winter.
