DOG, from a few years back, is also a Channing Tatum film and performance that wasn’t what was been sold in the trailers. What was played as a cute animal movie turned out to be a movie about soldiers suffering from PTSD and recovering from war, and it’s pretty great too.

ROOFMAN: The trailers pulled a switch; this is a bit more serious though it has funny moments. But this was excellent. Probably Channing Tatum’s best performance. Has a ton of heart and the film feels old fashioned in the best ways. This was far better than I expected, and worth your time.

Oh it’s not that good.

From one iconic design to another: Tron (1982) & Akira (1988)

Director and writer Katsuhiro Ōtomo: “In terms of Kaneda's bike in Akira, the initial inspiration was the lightcycles from Tron designed by Syd Mead. However, they are wide, so I halved them and used that as an initial basis.”

It should have opened in the fall. THE THING, too. I think it would have done better.

I don't defend my love of TRON critically. Don't much want to. I just think it's... cool.
alancerny.bsky.social
With some distance from TRON: ARES, I'm just as fond of it as I was earlier in the week. Still wish Leto wasn't involved, but us TRONheads know how dumb these movies get. We love them anyway. TRON: ARES is just as dumb as the previous ones, but it's well-paced, fun, and stays true to the source.

The techs' love of TRON is just how silly and not accurate it is. TRON was made by artists who loved the idea of computing and had no idea how they worked. I think the new movie carries that spirit.

One thing I'd change in cinematic history is that THE THING in 1982 would have been a huge box office success. E.T. dominated all and THE THING came out two weeks later and the audience just couldn't adjust tonally. But had THE THING been a $50-75 millioner? Carpenter could well be an Oscar winner.

John Carpenter's greatness didn't really become evident until the Internet era. Before, we kinda loved his movies in secret, then we all came together and realized he really was a master filmmaker.

throwing this prompt from Twitter in here. what examples you got?
tweet by @Caol_MacCormaic that reads, uncs of film twitter: what are some movies that are canonical now but were basically unknown when we were coming up? like Come and See or Possession. inversely: what are some movies or filmmakers that seem to have fallen off? (Takashi Miike comes to mind)

Listening to Wendy Carlos' soundtrack for TRON, and folks, I got nothing against Daft Punk and Nine Inch Nails. Both delivered stellar scores for their entries. But Wendy Carlos got all the weirdness of this movie, and her playful synths make TRON feel even bigger than its groundbreaking visuals.

A great essay on my use of failure and self-improvement as themes in both my books and movies.

Thanks for the amazing, thoughtful write up, T.J.

Been on a late 1970s/very early 1980s rock kick this week - Boston, Kansas, Styx, REO Speedwagon, a little bit of Rush, Van Halen, even some Foghat. Dunno why, but those hooks are owning me right now. “Foreplay/Long Time,” holy shit what a song. “Renegade”, “Carry On Wayward Son…” bliss.

AMAZING night not only with dear friends but happy to announce BLACK PHONE 2 is legit on of the best sequels I’ve seen in a while: equal parts a “Chapter 2” and “A New Beginning”, it’s full of heart but hits HARD too.
Thank you for the invite @crobertcargill.bsky.social!

ME: Now Mom, just remember, there's a lot of disinformation and AI in your social feed and your friends' Facebook.
MOM: I know! My friend sent me this crazy post where someone used AI to make an image of a giant frog fighting Army troops!
ME: ... okay, no, that one's ... goddamit, Portland.
