Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

I’m fully off-boarding to Linux, again. 10 was just functional enough to pull me back. And 11 seems onerous enough to walk.

I have SO MANY THOUGHTS both as a poor kid who was raised in music and as a library worker facing a society that increasingly has no use for art.

Thing one: poor people can absolutely understand complex topics. The author is right there.

AND.

Our society is now such that people want to—

“Thanks to the solidity of bearded vulture nest structures and their locations in the western Mediterranean… they have acted as [ #archivists], conserving historical material in good condition."

A shoe made from twigs and grass is 675 y.o. while a basket in the nest was woven about 150 years ago!!

It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.

Right. The Buddha's teaching alerts us to the fact that even pleasurable experience is *unsatisfactory* as long as we're not awake to the genuinely miraculous nature of experience per se.

translation of "Altura's" post:
It is necessary to understand, and not just on an intellectual level, why the Buddha's statement about the truth of dissatisfaction is not pessimistic news.

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

In 1900, traveling to Darjeeling meant gazing upon the grandeur of the snow-capped Himalayas and imagining the inaccessible lands that lay beyond them in Tibet.

Visiting Darjeeling at this time also meant having the rare opportunity to encounter and observe real Tibetan lamas.🧵

The image show a photograph printed on a postcard depicting a group of seven men dressed in Tibetan Buddhist robes. Three sit in front of the four others who are standing. One man sitting is reading a ritual text, while the other two are holding ritual implements including mala beads, a prayer wheel, a vajra, and bell. The background shows large window panes and a section with crisscross patterns. The texture of the photograph evokes a vintage feel.
