even 75/25 reacting vs vision & moment building would be a radical improvement in left political discourse

right now we’re at 99.9/0.1

which I think speaks to the fundamental complacency & conservatism of even the social democratic lib-prog-left
“There should be rich and poor, the free and the servile, based on folk-notions of worthiness [inherited wealth x educational status]” is an exceedingly common politics.

Hanania has used the new norms of contrarianism to sneak bog standard rich lib politics into modern RW media.
watching hanania despair about the reality of modern right wing politics is kinda funny
I have no doubt that Nancy Pelosi, not being a sociopath, had a lot of good in her and did lots of good.

That makes her roughly equivalent to the cleaning lady in the hotel I stayed at last month.
On an impact level, I think the sports metric concept of “wins above replacement” applies. What was *their* **unique** contribution.

On the level of individual character, what did they sacrifice for the greater good that can’t be explained by self-interest?
I don’t know that CEOs of profitable companies are necessarily worth the millions they make & I don’t know that pols that pass good legislation did good or are necessarily good people.

I DO think that most para-social assumptions of famous ppl’s merit & character are pre-democratic & servile.
Thank you Speaker Pelosi - you have made history and served your country and San Francisco with honor, dignity, grace, and style. You have helped millions, from AIDS to Chinese grad students fearing Tiananmen Square backlash, from the Great Recession to the ACA, to the pandemic. The greatest!

finance guys on twitter are like "can't believe zohran hired lina khan. she wants to make it illegal to bundle memecoin futures into junk stocks and sell them to public worker pension plans. the public won't stand for it."
The most devastating response you can give to a pundit is “can you explain to me your methodology here?”
even if glib evopsych *were* true it would have to content with the most salient fact about us: behavioral adaptability and pre-frontal neuroplasticity.

Like, shit *could be* hardwired and yet its effect size could be swamped by “we decided acting like that was bad and now we’re doing better”.

wooly-brained drivel is how they avoid the cognitive dissonance of “we are special boys and girls” vs their revealed commitment to privilege over principle.
looking forward to more hard-hitting journalism from the times like "Does the Negro Belong in the Modern Office?" and "Do Homosexuals Have a Place in Schools?"
The rich reactionaries feed the poor fascism and feed each other wooly-brained drivel

When many other Democratic leaders in Congress were cravenly supporting the run-up to the Iraq War, Nancy Pelosi opposed it and whipped votes in the House against it.

She has many other career accomplishments but that brave and prescient stand is what I'll remember.

advertising is fundamentally incompatible with a liberal society that posits the inherent freedom and dignity of

Meta earns $3.5 billion every six months from showing Faceboon and Instagram users 15 billion “higher legal risk” scam ad impressions a day, internal documents state.

That haul vastly exceeds how much the company expects regulators
To fine it for running scam ads.

BREAKING: After months of stonewalling by Starbucks, unionized baristas just voted 92% to authorize a ULP strike unless Starbucks finalizes fair contracts & stops union busting.

If forced, our baristas will strike in dozens of cities on November 13 – the company's busiest sales day of the year.
Starbucks unionized workers say they'll strike on Nov. 13 if coffee giant doesn't finalize contract
Union members say they are ready to strike on the chain's Red Cup Day if Starbucks doesn't finalize a contract with their union by then.

The way all of these people convinced themselves that Mamdani is antisemitic is a subject far more worthy of media examination than any of the ‘groupthink on campuses!’ thinkpieces we’ve been subjected to

remember all those hot takes during the primary about how Mamdani was the candidate for rich white liberals? a "champagne socialist" ?
yeah, about that
We like our reactionaries harmless and quirky
Is maybe the tradeoff here individual and department-wide civil liabilities for police brutality + internal promotion & (centralized) professionalization?
(They will not say this. Centrists are protecting a class interest, not looking for popular, pragmatic solutions to social problems.)
a centrist could even say “see? when you go too far, the public notices and reacts. So l don’t worry about Dems rallying around big bold ideas. I don’t think they’ll work! But if they don’t work, voters will notice, the GOP will be drawn to exploit a ‘moderate’ lane, & democracy will fix it.”
Suicidal for centrists to be begging for moderation when now would be a great time to pass some big, ambitious policies and remind people why Democrats are better than Republicans.
