“They disrespected the fans!” is one of the most ignorant criticisms out there and it’s never going to be treated as legitimate.

You can dislike something. You can hate it. But if you say, “This story disrespected ME” just because you, as a matter of personal taste, didn’t like it..

I think what annoys me most about those guys is they can’t accept that a conscious choice to tell a story that goes against canon-adjacent assumptions isn’t “disrespecting” TREK. And they have no right to take it as PERSONAL disrespect when someone approaches the universe from a different angle
bitterscriptreader.bsky.social
These are the guys who think that there’s only one way to be a fan and ABSOLUTELY have no cope when a new Trek series explores something that wasn’t 100% made for them and them alone.

But Wil’s right. I know a lot of those writers and they are HUGE fans of Trek

Wil Wheaton put out a YouTube video where he said, “everyone who works on Star Trek today, all of the writers, all of the department heads, everyone who designs all of the things you see, and 70% of the actors ... [is] a lifelong Star Trek fan” and it’s breaking the brains of all the bad fanboys

I want to make it perfectly clear I've got nothing against TRON: ARES. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

But what I want most is for the younger generations to love going to the movies, which means we need more movies for them. Not every movie needs to be for 50 year old white guys.

In 1995, you could make a Brady Bunch movie successful enough to be a hit because kids born a decade after the show ended were still exposed to daily reruns because they were always on.

Today, my kid can just watch what ge already likes when he wants so he’s never force-fed the culture of MY youth

The third act of Tron: Ares heavily focuses on two 50+ year old white men talking about how much they love Depeche Mode, a microcosm of why these big Disney blockbusters aren't resonating with young people anymore

This isn't rocket science, Hollywood. When you make movies for Gen Z & Alpha, they pay to see them. FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S opened to $80M WITH a day & date streaming release on Peacock. When you make movies for their dads, those dads have a choice between the theater or their bitchin' home theater.

I'm perplexed at watching pundits in the trades struggling to explain Tron Ares' disappointing opening.

Was it covid? Do people just not like science fiction? etc. etc.

The main reason is pretty obvious: Tron isn't a popular franchise. Nobody's interested in nostalgia for a failed 1980s project.

By the way: Isn't it time somebody released (or leaked) Tilda, the HBO pilot that starred Diane Keaton as a Nikki Finke-like gossip columnist? Also with, I believe, Elliot Page, Wes Bentley, Jason Patric, Sanaa Lathan. 2011, many cooks inc. Bill Condon, at least two versions.

I don't argue with anyone who won't watch a Woody Allen movie; it's a personal choice, different for everyone. But Diane Keaton is a big reason I almost never say "[Movie X] is dead to me." My argument isn't "Separate the artist from the art"; it's that movies are never just one person's legacy.

This is a really good article, and as an inveterate shitposter, I keep asking where the adults are.

I don’t *want* to be protesting! I don’t *want* to be arrested for standing up to oppression!! I want a boring government that works and takes care of everyone and I can go be stupid online!!!

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

Every week it’s “do they want people/kids/disabled people/seniors to die?!”

And we keep explaining that yes, they do. Yes, they think it’s good when “weak” or marginalized people are eliminated, and they will do anything to encourage that.

And every week somehow it’s a surprise.
