I often urge law students to be precise when and where they use passive language, and to notice the work it does when used by others (judges, politicians, reporters, and anyone describing actions being done without actors). This is a great, but awful, example.

Classic CBC. "Bill could lead to law enforcement acting more freely in Canada"

How does a US bill lead to this, without Canada actively allowing this? Can we use the active voice? Can we actually use words the way that journalists are supposedly able to?

You would not fire these people—including the staff of the hugely, HUGELY important 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report'—if you cared at all about public health, if you wanted people to live.

And you would not let your thuggish henchmen fire people like this if you were a responsible president.

Update: Bari Weiss’s first pitch at CBS — a roundtable with Antony Blinken, Mike Pompeo, and Hillary Clinton that ended up being a virtual interview with Clinton & Condoleezza Rice — has about 150 viewers on YouTube.

Added with the 24/7 CBS stream, it’s just over 1200 viewers.

Ontario’s expansion of alcohol sales has been a “real game-changer” for convenience stores, driving higher foot traffic and replacing revenue lost due to a “huge” decrease in cigarette sales, according to the Convenience Industry Council of Canada.
Ontario’s convenience stores were in trouble, until beer and wine sales. Now revenues are surging

The only time I use LLMs for writing is when I know a word but can't remember it and need to give context clues to tease it out. It's basically an efficient, polite thesaurus. So, woe to you thesaurus publishers I guess?

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually
