This is pathological. This woman is deeply unwell.
Noem lies shamelessly: "An individual approached order Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic gun. The officers attempted to disarm this individual, but the armed suspect reacted violently. This looks like a situation where an individual arrived to inflict maximum damage and kill law enforcement"

By who? Who shot the person dead? You saw the video. We all know a federal agent shot a man dead who was prone on the ground. Also, it's not "according to officials." It's according to verified video seen with your eyes. Not saying what anyone can obviously see with their eyes is a form of lying.

This "don't do anything or Trump will invoke the insurrection act!" line is the prevailing wisdom among so many American liberals it's genuinely alarming, particularly because they pose literally no alternative course.
"If Walz fights this, Trump will invoke the Insurrection Act/send in the Marines!"

And then they'll start shooting people. You know, like what's happening now.

If you can't fight back against fascists because fascism will happen, the battle is already over and you lost.

This was a big "laws are fake" moment -- we had a huge bipartisan vote to ban tiktok, the Supreme Court ruled it was constitutional, and the Biden administration ... decided not to do anything because the Trump administration planned not to do anything (all of which violated the law)
US politicians: TikTok is an evil Chinese surveillance tool that must be sold to a god-fearing American company! Spying is evil!

Listening to this, it's clear that a lot of overly online right wingers, including influencers, just simply don't consider the actual lived existence of the people they're directing hate towards, in part because they don't encounter them ever in real life.
i joined matt bernstein to talk to ashley st clair, a mother to one of elon musks babies, who’s since exited the far right movement. we spent this time grilling her talking to her about her past bigotry and what made her change

ICE detain yet another minor child—chase him down his own street and tackle him to pavement.

"I am legal! I am legal!" he cries over and over in Spanish.

Agent pins the boy down in snow—he desperately tries to keep his exposed hands from freezing at -25°F wind chill temperature.

Our history, both the longterm and recent, explains why the whole system of protecting immigrants came together so quickly and efficiently. But, the bigger question is how will we use these actions to start building the future we want?
Today is the first general strike in Minneapolis in almost 100 years.

What if the work we're doing today — the work of showing the world another way is possible — was *real* work all along?

In Nova Scotia they have "storm chips." I miss storm chips.
I do not respect people who clean out the bread and milk before a normal snowstorm BUT I do respect those who go to Trader Joe’s. If you’re gonna be stuck inside for a couple of days you need treats.

I need a Canadian journalist to nail down exactly which US administrative officials people like Modry spoke to last summer w/r/t Alberta separation, and how close to the president they were.
Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: "Albertans are very independent people. There's a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

Fascists always lose because they're incompetent. Hitler was a speed head and lazy AF and forced his generals to self immolate in Russia because he thought he was a genius.
Reminder that Trump would've almost certainly be dealing with close fascist ally Pierre Polievre instead of sworn enemy Mark Carney as Canadian PM if he had just kept his mouth shut about annexing Canada for six months

In response to a question about messaging, Modry says, from the meetings with US administration, "they are solidly in favor of Alberta sovereignty and solidly not in favor of Alberta becoming the 51st state."
January 23, 2026 at 3:18 AM
How is the US government not looking into funding Alberta's transition to an independent state not garnering more attention?
US admin "suggested that it would be a good idea to see if the US would provide a line of credit that could conceivably be drawn on during that transition process from a province to a country," Modry says. He adds the need for that is "very unlikely."
January 23, 2026 at 5:10 AM
Nothing to see here. Just despicable Albertan traitors meeting with the Trump administration to secure funding to separate from Canada.
Modry says they've met with the US administration three times, and if the referendum passes but negotiations fail, Premier Smith could "declare sovereignty unilaterally," which other countries would acknowledge.

If every Democrat voted NO on funding ICE, it would not have passed the House. But, 7 House Democrats voted to fund Trump's lawless, masked goons, so it passed.

Hakeem Jeffries refused to whip his members to vote against ICE funding. Genuinely unforgivable.
NEW: DHS appropriations bill funding ICE passes 220-207

7 Democrats voted YES on the bill:
- Jared Golden
- Marie Gluesenkamp Perez
- Henry Cuellar
- Tom Suozzi
- Laura Gillen
- Don Davis
- Vicente Gonzalez

One Republican voted NO: Thomas Massie

The 5-year-old arrested by ICE In Minnesota is detained at Dilley. We reported on conditions there in the below article.

Parents said the food was contaminated with mold and worms & that children were so under so much stress that they were hitting their own faces & wetting themselves.
Analysis by The Marshall Project of ICE data obtained by the Deportation Data Project found that the Trump administration’s revival of family detention has swept thousands of children into ICE custody. At least 3,800 children under 18, including 20 infants, have been booked since Trump took office.

Former immigration staffers argue ICE is choosing to detain families for prolonged periods to speed deportations and compel them to leave.
