Three days ago was the 3rd anniversary of our loss of Chloe. She was such a wonderful companion. We still miss her. Memories are strong & we draw upon what she taught us about life. Hug & pamper your fuzzy child today & everyday. Images (adoption; thinker; hiding in Texas bluebonnets; New Mexico)

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

This week, we join the @ucdavis.bsky.social community in celebrating #PostdocAppreciationWeek
— a time to recognize the contributions and impact of our postdoctoral scholars.

Thank you for your dedication and the difference you make every day! 👏

Earthquakes are an example of the importance of engineering - from geotechnical and structural engineering, to transportation and environmental engineering (for secure systems and aftermath response), power engineering, materials engineering, and more.

The West Coast's most dangerous faults may rupture 'in rhythm'
For over 3,100 years, these fault lines have moved in "partial synchronization."

The cruelty of saying “hospitals are ready” by increasing ICU beds and body bags… instead of fixing the ventilation.

Just mull over that for a bit #MedSky.

My dad made me this at my request. We’re in LA County, so I ran it last week with our poor air quality. I’ve made several Corsi-Rosenthal boxes for 10’s elementary school.

Thinking of building a Corsi-Rosenthal box instead of buying an air purifier. At both major home improvement store websites, if you put 4 MERV 13 20x20 filters in your cart, the site is like "Hey, do you also want a 20" box fan?" The algorithm knows!

I've almost got the Corsi-Rosenthal box together. My left thumb needs a break.

(Glad I bought white duct tape.)

Hell yeah I was an early adopter of the Corsi-Rosenthal box in 2020! Also Came in handy in January during the LA Fires. I keep a supply of new filters for them, too!

Oh shit now the news is saying the fire is flaring up again

During the summer the sky turned red from wildfires, researchers found a DIY solution when air purifiers were impossible to buy that worked more efficiently and cleaned more air faster for a fraction of the cost called a Corsi-Rosenthal Box

As indoor activity increases and if you're looking for a very inexpensive and effective air purifier -- try making a CR Box. Easy. I've had mine (2) for 5 years. This one has the industrial look.
Much gratitude to coinventers @jimrosenthal5.bsky.social and @jimrosenthal5.bsky.social ❤️🌹🙏

Thanks for doing this, @carlzimmer.com. Those on the front lines of scientific research trying to better the world need the voices of exceptional journalists/authors like you to underscore the deep costs of attacks on basic and translational science, and engineering. Deep appreciation.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Both emergency dept and wastewater data suggest a rapid decline in prevalence after a relatively modest summer peak. The lull in evolution continues... with no new fast variants close behind XFG.

That being said, we're still watching BA.3.2*

Spent an afternoon cleaning 31 very dirty solar photovoltaic panels that were caked with dirt, pollen, and bird feces.

Before and after for one panel shown below. Could even see the reflection of me waving in the clean panel!

I was peppered with questions by engineering paparazzi during Moove-In days (helping students move into the dorms).

It's not easy answering questions on random topics so quickly!
