I'm too tired to be witty right now, but you might get lucky and catch me at the right level of sleep deprivation. Law, politics, democracy, travel, cats. A republic if we can keep it, indeed.

I am incredibly sick of living through a time in this country that is both historically evil and historically stupid.

We’ve known for forever that they don’t think gendered violence is a really serious thing but it’s still wild to hear them say it so plainly.

Q: This has been reported for a while. Cory Mills was accused of beating a girlfriend in his DC apt. Are you concerned about these allegations?

JOHNSON: You have to ask Rep. Mills about that. He's been a faithful colleague. I don't know the details. Let's talk about things that are really serious

Again, it is a full-blown federal felony crime for anyone in the White House or Executive Office of the President to order tax investigations into anyone.

And it's not just a crime to DO it, it's even a federal crime for an employee not to REPORT such an order to the Treasury Inspector General.
26 U.S. Code § 7217 - Prohibition on executive branch influence over taxpayer audits and other investigations
U.S. Code
Notes
prev | next

(c)Exceptions

(1)to an applicable person by or on behalf of the taxpayer and forwarded by such applicable person to the Internal Revenue Service;
(2)by an applicable person for disclosure of return or return information under section 6103 if such request is made in accordance with the requirements of such section; or
(3)by the Secretary of the Treasury as a consequence of the implementation of a change in tax policy.
(d)Penalty
Any person who willfully violates subsection (a) or fails to report under subsection (b) shall be punished upon conviction by a fine in any amount not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.

It’s fun how the Neo liberals are openly saying they don’t plan on defunding the Gestapo. They’re just going to to ask them to stop wearing masks nicely and that’s it. The national level Democratic Party is completely unwilling to do what is going to be needed to regain democracy.
gregsargent.bsky.social
This is good: Rep Eric Swalwell tells me House Dems are now discussing making an end to mask-wearing a precondition for ICE funding.

"When we are in the majority, the masks are coming off," he says.

This is the next frontier in anti-Trump resistance.

This is an appreciation post for Stout's belly.

My foster kittens are usually at least a little underweight when I first get them, and nothing makes me happier than a good chubby kitten belly!

Feels quaint, almost cliché, to say this about a Trump action, but just for the record:

This is all illegal, the President can't simply disregard the laws passed and agencies created by Congress, and both Vought & Trump would be impeached if the Constitution or the rule of law mattered to the GOP.

Always so helpful! My permanent residents also enjoy providing that kind of assistance. 😹

I can't even remember the last hiss! When another foster had to babysit them for me, she said they were a little hissy with her dog, but that's it!

Stout and Bock are practicing their "paint me like one of your French girls" poses.
In the center of the photo, a kitten with the most perfect chubby kitten belly in the world relaxes on his side, eyes half closed. He's mostly white with tabby markings on his head and some cow spots on his back. Two other adorable kittens are visible in the bottom, but he's the one stealing the show. On the other side of the kitten pile, another kitten decides to give her brother a run for his money. She's all the way on her back, asleep, with front paws adorably dangling over her. She's a muted calico, mostly grey with orange spots, and with a beautiful white belly, front socks, and back pantaloons.

1, 2, 3, 4. Four kittens! I think it may be supper time. 😹
3 kittens (two muted calicos and one mostly white with tabby markings on his head) in my lap and 1 more (muted torbie) next to my leg. Half snoozing and half looking at me and purr purr purring away.

“The Defense Department has confiscated the badges of the Pentagon reporters from virtually every major media organization in America,” the Pentagon Press Association said

Oct. 15, 2025
PENTAGON PRESS ASSOCIATION
STATEMENT
Today, the Defense Department confiscated the badges of the Pentagon reporters from virtually every major media organization in America. It did this because reporters would not sign onto a new media policy over its implicit threat of criminalizing national security reporting and exposing those who sign it to potential prosecution.
The Pentagon Press Association's members are still committed to reporting on the U.S. military. But make no mistake, today, Oct. 15, 2025 is a dark day for press freedom that raises concerns about a weakening U.S. commitment to transparency in governance, to public accountability at the Pentagon and to free speech for all.

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Right?

Also, though my irritation at USPS is what started this thread, they are FAR better than FedEx or UPS, especially at my current address.
jamielynnkitten.bsky.social
UPS once sent me a photo of my package being delivered to the wrong building, and when I filed an appeal, they said it was delivered to the right place. 🙃

Yeah, that happened to me recently. So frustrating.

Unless you're literally standing by the door waiting for the package, there's no way you can get there in time before they leave. It's not just inconvenient. It's also incredibly ableist.

Even when delivery people use my buzzer (which can't actually buzz anyone into the building, it's just the worst-sounding doorbell in the world), they often just leave and walk away immediately. So even if I can run down, I have to try to chase them down the sidewalk to get my shit.

Good times.

I read articles and posts about UPS, expecting to have some sympathy for them because of the tariff insanity. But nope. They're destroying things like family albums that have priceless meaning but no monetary value, and without giving anyone a chance to appeal. Completely unacceptable.
jamielynnkitten.bsky.social
That would piss me off less than the lies, at least!

I also occasionally get notifications that say things like "business was closed," when I live in a residential building on a residential street.
jamielynnkitten.bsky.social
It's all bad. And USPS and FedEx are both better than UPS, which now appears to have a policy of just destroying international packages rather than trying to figure out tariff math. 🙃

Unprecedentedly illegal & unconstitutional crimes - things that make Nixon's presidency-ending crimes look like harmless high school pranks - now happening daily:
gregsargent.bsky.social
Trump is no longer even pretending to have any kind of argument that his murdering of people in the Caribbean Sea has any kind of statutory validity. Just straight up declaring that he has quasi-unlimited power to execute people based on (nominal) suspicion.
