Indie devs and curious nerds!

I've written a few articles for IGDA on localization for games, including scheduling, how to ensure good quality localization, and a guide on LQA.

Release games in other languages. Release games set in other parts of the world.

But for the love of god, understand that not everyone knows those other languages and provide a way to understand things like signage or foreign language vocals if you're releasing in other countries.

Still looking for someone, haven't found a single person so far (that I can contact). I have a 46-episode script that I need translated. This would be a paid job!

Completely unrelated to my 2am doomposting but does anyone know an English to Japanese translator, ideally with experience in screenplays?

All Systems Red by Martha Wells was one of the novellas that got me back into the habit of reading.

If anyone is struggling to get back into reading (or get into reading to begin with), I cannot recommend novellas enough. They're short, but long enough to get a good story of of. And they quickly give you a sense of achievement.

I saw a video in 2019 that pointed out if I only read one book a year until I died, I would only read maybe 50 books. And I thought, heeeeck no. So I started reading more with the aim of reading at least 24 books a year.

Since then, I've read 290 books.

Books are amazing and wonderful.

Reading for pleasure has fallen by 40 percent since 2000. This is not progress. You should read because it's good for your brain, your soul. You should read because our freedoms will not long endure in a post-literate world. Most of all, you should read because it's fun.

Camping is great fun when you don't have a loud group of people playing music even louder until 1am.

I can’t stress enough how utterly embarrassing it is to see experienced artists suddenly use AI

I can never have a shred of respect for someone who used to be a peer & who decided to embrace something that’s the opposite of any craft & any human endeavour

Typhoon potentially skirting one spot on the main island of Japan and of course it's the place we planned to go camping. Probably won't be typhoon winds but will mean rain. Plan B - a random campsite in the opposite direction!!!

We don’t use AI for subtitles. Every line is carefully timed and translated by real people (who cry during finales and debate Best Girls, just like you).

when people say genAI is the future I am struck by how short sighted and fatalistic this is as a concept

it’s recycling our past for the future, it’s drinking our filtered waste while not thinking about how many times you can do that, it’s hoping tomorrow’s answers have already been said

Caught up on the livecast from this week. Someone mentioned that other companies are starting to put 'no ai was used' kind of notes on their games and in rulebooks. I think y'all might be interested to know that there is a movement there and people look for that!

Annual reminder that without literary translators, most Nobel Prize-winning authors couldn’t be read by the committee/readers, so celebrate them too. Congrats @ottiliemulzet.bsky.social et al! This isn’t taking away from the author, it’s adding recognition of the miracle/labour/skill of translation.

This is also true for translation. (Because translating is writing.)

Related unsolicited translating advice: be open to constructive criticism from people who have more experience than you.

Failure is nothing to be ashamed of. It means you tried something. No-one succeeds without failures: it’s a necessary part of the process.

Sadly I can't talk about what I'm currently working on, but I do have a blog where I post stuff about Japanese-English media translation and interviews. (At least I used to. Need to get back to that...)

"but it's everywhere now so we just have to accept it's the new reality" motherfucker we can just stop putting it everywhere! we did it with asbestos and CFCs and lead-based paint or petrol and make-up with arsenic in it! if everyone is using something and it's bad, we can choose to stop!

"anti-AI people should just learn more about it" motherfucker I know so much about it, that's why I'm anti-AI
