Amazon controls over a third of the global cloud computing market.

Its customers include Capital One, United Airlines, and the US Army.

Today's outage should be a wakeup call: Dependence on a handful of powerful corporations is a threat to economic and national security.
BREAKING: Amazon Web Services

A massive AWS outage early this morning sent major websites and apps down for several hours

Tracking site Downdetector has received over 8 million reports around the globe

Whatever you think of the White House as a building or a symbol, the fact is that the image of it being torn apart on a whim two days after 7 million people hit the streets against autocracy is going to make a HUGE amount of people really, really angry, and that's an energy that should be harnessed.

In some ways, the regime half-assedly tearing off part of the White House without regard for construction protocols might have more of an impact on the offline folks than the past ten months.

I mean this is viscerally upsetting because it's really genuinely him treating the white house like it's his own personal property; he's the king and it's his palace. No other president ever thought like this, even if they were a fucking horrible person, because it goes against our founding creed
I'm not a West Wing obsessed lib or anything but the more I see pictures of this the more fucked up I think it is. It's like he cut off one of the hands of the Lincoln memorial with an angle grinder so he could add a big gun to it.
The Treasury Department instructed employees not to share to share photos of the demolition of parts of the White House’s East Wing

So my sister’s whole department got furloughed yesterday. Her and 2 others remain.

When you live in the DC area politics touches every part of your life knowingly or unknowingly.

So heads up, I just realized the "Require Alt-Text" setting on my profile got disabled somehow when I was being too hasty and clicked submit without entering alt-text and it posted anyway.

It's happened before too so might want to just check your accessibility settings

This morning, I’m at the CSCW conference in a session on “Activism in a Time if Data.” Most of the papers seem to assume activism for “good,” ending with design recs for supporting activism. As far as I can tell, none of the papers center right wing activism. Seems like we have a massive blind spot.

“A lot of people are making their comebacks in a really surreptitious way. There isn’t an overt discussion that they’ve had about their past behavior or how they’re thinking differently about their work or about their relationship to women or employees”

What Is Lorin Stein Doing at “Tablet”?
The former Paris Review editor was ostracized over sexual harassment allegations. Now he’s editing a divisive, right-wing Jewish magazine. What’s going on?

Lack of interaction with posts like this is fine. But it reminds me of how inverse my understanding of social media is: I want it to be primarily trading oddities we find, comments on texts, only secondarily necessary but endless churn of same few political articles and points. But churn won.
