No one plays mandolin like Bill Monroe anymore, and that’s one of the biggest problems with new bluegrass. Everyone’s wanting to be David Grisman, Sam Bush, Chris Thile, Ronnie McCoury, and/or Sierra Hull.

Fantastic virtuosos as they all are, they just lack that…something…Monroe had.

If I call it “slop” or “jank” it sounds insulting, but Bill Monroe was an absolute master of the instrument, and I don’t really have any other way of describing it as opposed to the slick and polished playing of the aforementioned. It was unrefined I guess. Like trying to leash a stampeding bull.

I live near-ish Auburn, and I avoid pretty much that entire part of Lee County on home game weekends from Thursday evening to Sunday afternoon. Downtown Opelika is as close as I’ll get. And even then…

I would just like everyone to know that it's possible for North Carolina, Florida State, and Boston College to ALL go 0-9 in the ACC. None of them play either of the others.
