Yeah, many of us give up and hide out there!

Were there any Katharines in attendance? I don’t often meet others in the wild so it’s v exciting.

One of my regrets in life is not saving the email we got about this, subject line “SNAKE!!!!!”

katebradleyhistory.bsky.social
Every now and then, when I think about Starts of the Academic Year Past, I remember 2008, when we had a campus alert about Snakey, a 6ft boa constrictor, who had escaped nearby…

Yep - I’ve not seen anything in the local press about it, but I can see the appeal of getting drone footage of the wreck (for some, at least!)

katebradleyhistory.bsky.social
Yep - and, since this summer, a no-fly zone over it, too!

Which I wish had been there before…

I wouldn’t associate Sheppey with being such a target as the dockyard is long gone but, yes, the SS Richard Montgomery absolutely is one…

Happy Monday! I was having a good day until I was reminded by the SS Richard Montgomery… via @kentcurrent.news
Screen shot of text: An ally of Vladimir Putin has gone on Russian state television to suggest blowing up the SS Montgomery, a sunken ship in the Thames Estuary with roughly 1,400 tonnes of explosives on board.

Picture it: White racist thugs who've never done a day's work in their lives, taunting brown people in trains or pubs about 'not doing enough work for our great country' (and then demanding they do humiliating things to prove themselves).

It's never just the policy; it's the atmosphere generated

Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering

Ran the Vitality 10K face!

Managed to knock 2.5 mins off last year’s time, too. Think that warrants putting my feet up this afternoon!

Two perspectives of the theatre at Uncanny last night in Brighton with @aridge.bsky.social! Inept purple squiggle roughly locates our spot! It was fab, though I remain #TeamSceptic
A view of the stage - two sets of modular shelving on either side of the stage, with archive boxes and objects associated with the podcast on them. There are three large screens above them, which are currently showing a blueish background, two of them have the word Uncanny on them. A screenshot of Danny Robins’ selfie of the theatre, with him, Evelyn Hollow and Ciarán O’Keefe in the foreground, the stalls, circles etc behind them.

It is now apparently a September tradition that I bung packed lunches in the wrong bag, though the 2025 edition is my school dinner-eating son getting my pasta salad and me getting… nowt!!

I hope your Monday is going better than my son’s, who has gone to school with my salad whilst I have the prospect of chicken popcorn and a Marvel oat bar…

History curious? You don't need to be in London (or the UK) to attend many Institute of Historical Research seminars, although if you're in Bloomsbury you'll enjoy doing so. Most are hybrid (online/in person). They're free, usually fortnightly and open to the public.

Academia.edu is changing its Terms and Conditions, and they're so outrageous (AI training; signing over ownership to them etc) I closed my account today.

We were in schools when I arrived in 2006 - that reflected an abolition of department in the late 1990s, I think? Most schools = departments elsewhere, but mine was and remains a smorgasbord of social science disciplines… but we lost faculties for divisions, and schools have merged again since…
