A1 and DEADLINE, two of Britain’s seminal comics magazines are soon set to return as one, straight from the heart of UK comics counterculture.

I adore Planet of Evil and don’t know why it isn’t more highly regarded. Granted, it’s bookended by stone-cold classics but it’s peak Hinchcliffe Who.

Refusians! No wait … Spiridons … no wait, Visians … ooh how about Xoannon’s creatures?

Well, at least any of these would be really quick to do!

Day 3 of the Janissary Band ear worm.

Just found myself repeatedly whistling it in the kitchen, which for anyone unfamiliar with the track, is only going to draw strange looks from people.

This time next week, I'll probably be whistling the electronic soundscapes from The Sea Devils!

For reasons I cannot fathom, I've had Peter Howell's Janissary Band from the 1983 Doctor Who – The Music soundtrack album stuck in my head for 2 days!

Sure, I played that album to death in 1983-4, but not in 20+ yrs. And I haven't watched Snakedance in ages.

This is how the Mara gets in, innit.
Album cover to Doctor Who - The Music (1983). Why does Peter Davison look so creepy? Does he know Janissary Band will randomly ear worm me 42 years later?

The arts are also about critical thinking, which doesn’t make for a compliant electorate willing to accept any guff they throw at you.

Why not the sciences too, you ask? Surely that’s about reasoned thought?

Look at where the tech bros have gotten us. The Right aren’t worried about the sciences.
joannechocolat.bsky.social
The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

So many thoughts... so little time!

#ADHDAwarenessMonth
Title: “Sharing Thoughts.”

Top panel labeled “Non-ADHD”: One person carefully holds a single green butterfly taken from labeled jars of “Experiences,” “Ideas,” and “Opinions,” calmly sharing it with another person who listens with interest.

Bottom panel labeled “ADHD”: The ADHD character joyfully releases a colorful swarm of butterflies—orange, blue, purple, pink, yellow, and green—representing many thoughts and ideas all at once, while the other person looks startled and overwhelmed.

Just before he died I got to chat to Brian Clemens as part of a press junket for a remaster of The Professionals.

After about 3 polite-but-bored answers I said:

"Okay would you mind if we spent the rest of this talking about 'Bugs'? That show BLEW ME AWAY as a teen."

And he was so happy he cried.

I once worked for Radio Rentals and one time I had to speak to a customer on the phone after he sent a complaint letter. After he spent about half an hour moaning about the service that he had received, I said I noticed it said he was a composer on his letter head and his name was Christopher Gunning. So I said are you the Christopher Gunning who did the music for the BBC’s Day of the Triffids, and he said he was, so I proceeded to tell him how amazing I thought his music was for the series, which I have loved ever since I first watched it aged 10. Well his whole attitude immediately changed and I think I really made his day. True story.

Aristotle pretty much had a name for everything. I love how so much of his work is still highly applicable today.

(Not his theory on how eels reproduced though …)

“It is not clear if Mr. Trump strangling the puppy violates the It Is Quite Clearly Against the Law to Strangle Puppies Act of 1922”

It is not clear that Mr. Trump’s image can be featured on a coin. An 1866 law enshrined a tradition that only deceased people could appear on U.S. currency to avoid the appearance that America was a monarchy. Trump admin is planning to do it anyway.

That’s what threw me for a bit. But the cryptic clue confirmed my initial gut.

George would probably raise an eyebrow and describe it as a whim of Ann’s, before deciding she preferred the countryside once more.

Donald Trump said it will be "a big insult" if he doesn't win the Nobel Peace Prize. Some fear the outcome if he's overlooked.

A cartoon from my new book, 'Physics for Cats'. Out next week: www.tomgauld.com
A scientist stands in front of an enormous contraption
"I created this device to test my theory that our entire reality is a simulation, but the readings I'm
getting suggest something much worse"

 "What?" Asks a second scientist.
"We're living in a cartoon!" Says the first.
"Does it at least have a good punchline?" says the second.
The fiorst scientist carefully looks over the data, then eventually replies "Nope"
