Day 3 of the Janissary Band ear worm.

Just found myself repeatedly whistling it in the kitchen, which for anyone unfamiliar with the track, is only going to draw strange looks from people.

This time next week, I'll probably be whistling the electronic soundscapes from The Sea Devils!

For reasons I cannot fathom, I've had Peter Howell's Janissary Band from the 1983 Doctor Who – The Music soundtrack album stuck in my head for 2 days!

Sure, I played that album to death in 1983-4, but not in 20+ yrs. And I haven't watched Snakedance in ages.

This is how the Mara gets in, innit.

The arts are also about critical thinking, which doesn’t make for a compliant electorate willing to accept any guff they throw at you.

Why not the sciences too, you ask? Surely that’s about reasoned thought?

Look at where the tech bros have gotten us. The Right aren’t worried about the sciences.

The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

Just before he died I got to chat to Brian Clemens as part of a press junket for a remaster of The Professionals.

After about 3 polite-but-bored answers I said:

"Okay would you mind if we spent the rest of this talking about 'Bugs'? That show BLEW ME AWAY as a teen."

And he was so happy he cried.

I once worked for Radio Rentals and one time I had to speak to a customer on the phone after he sent a complaint letter. After he spent about half an hour moaning about the service that he had received, I said I noticed it said he was a composer on his letter head and his name was Christopher Gunning. So I said are you the Christopher Gunning who did the music for the BBC’s Day of the Triffids, and he said he was, so I proceeded to tell him how amazing I thought his music was for the series, which I have loved ever since I first watched it aged 10. Well his whole attitude immediately changed and I think I really made his day. True story.

It is not clear that Mr. Trump’s image can be featured on a coin. An 1866 law enshrined a tradition that only deceased people could appear on U.S. currency to avoid the appearance that America was a monarchy. Trump admin is planning to do it anyway.

patreegs on instagram says You need to listen to it once completely through while driving a car alone. Then you have to listen to it indoors lying down. THEN you pick a few and listen to them WHILE you read the lyrics on your computer. You WILL find that you misheard some of the lyrics. DONT panic. Its COMPLETELY normal and healthy. DONT think about taylors life yet and DONT try to make sense of the lyrics and DONT panic if you dont like some of the songs at first bc your brain will LEARN to like them (evolutionary mechanism). THEN, continue listening on loop as needed but have 2-3 that you sometimes just listen to on repeat. THEN re-emerge into the world and connect with others about their response to the text. THEN apply practically to your life. THEN examine how they fit into taylors. At this point you can start to lightly engage in online discourse if that feels healthy and safe.

“Eldest Daughter" is a symptom of my overall issue with Taylor Swift: the scale of her music just feels fucking off. In 2025, she's no longer a lovelorn kid singing about Romeo and Juliet; she's a 35-year-old billionaire who's played sold out stadiums all over the world. She's Taylor Swift. That's her name. Damn near every living person knows who she is, and she's singing about the internet? About the fucking comments section? When she sings "I'm not a bad bitch," is she even aware that she's lying, that she's worshipped by more girls and women than almost anybody else? Even her love songs feel incorrect to me on these grounds. When I think about the real circumstances of her life, I just start wondering where the songs are about the housekeepers, the assistants, the cooks, the drivers, and every other person who's changed her life way more than the man in the Musso and Frank's booth in "Elizabeth Taylor." I struggle to trust her as the lyrical steward of ordinary human experiences. I am certain it's been many years since she's had one the way I have them, with all the waiting for a table that implies, and the navigating of customer service phone trees, the dithering over $35 travel insurance that I can never decide if I actually need, the frantic emails about unpaid freelance invoices, the trip back to the grocery store for the thing I forgot when I went earlier in the day, and all the other boring crap I have to do because I can't buy up other people's lifetimes so they have to do it for me.
