Under Republicans' govt shutdown, families could stop receiving food assistance on Nov. 1.

Trump has the authority & money to fund SNAP benefits through November, but he's currently choosing not to.

We're calling on the @USDA to reverse course and act NOW to feed our families.

This is complete bullshit, which was built upon by the panel majority, as Graber meticulously laid out in her dissent on October 20. For DOJ, now, to be like, "Oops, all our math was intentionally vague and/or deceptively wrong and all happened to favor us," is not credible.

"Look at 1930s, 1940s Germany," the Illinois National Guard member continued. "There is a point where if you didn't stand up to the Gestapo, are you just actively one of them now?"

The DC area is already particularly hard hit. If you're giving, please consider helping there as well.
There are others -

My team and I spent time last week helping with @afacfeeds.bsky.social, they do great work helping feed people in Northern Virginia.

More about them here: afac.org
As food banks across the country see rising demand, it was great to support @afacfeeds.bsky.social alongside my amazing team. We packed fruits and vegetables that will help feed families in our community.

At 2pm Judge Xinis is holding a 'virtual' hearing on govt's new stated plan of sending Abrego Garcia to Liberia by 10/31. Abrego says it's too late to switch again & govt must 1st try Costa Rica (already offered, but only if he'd plead guilty). I'll try to live blog here for @lawfaremedia.org .

Just finished reading The Memory of '76 by @michaelhattem.bsky.social. Can't recommend it enough. I just loved it. The perfect book for right now. Go buy it, especially if you're not an academic historian but want an accessible read to help you understand this bizarre commemorative moment.

You can't let crimes against humanity go unpunished or it will happen again and again
There's going to be a huge debate about whether to aggressively hold Trump officials and federal agents accountable after this is over.

However, it isn't just a matter of justice being served. The American economy, its diplomacy and national security literally depend on it.

To generate personal audience costs, as I've said before if Donald Trump is President on 1/21/2029 without a Constitutional amendment per regular Article V processes, I dont think my oath allows me to continue working in federal service (as would be true for any such POTUS)
If he can find a way to do it, he will. Full stop.

Comcast is funding part of Trump's new ballroom, and in exchange (something Darcy curiously doesn't mention), it's getting the completed decimation of the regulatory state and federal corporate oversight.

How much is the destruction of all federal consumer protection oversight worth, do you think?
Comcast’s Ballroom Dance
Donald Trump has spent years mocking Comcast chief Brian Roberts as a “lowlife”—now Roberts is helping fund Trump’s new White House ballroom, a move that’s left some of his own journalists mortified.

An update to this story: Today, the Michigan Court of Appeals held that a writ of mandamus shall issue to require the Legislature to present these 9 bills to the Governor for her to sign or veto.
So, there's this wacky Michigan politics story: In the lame-duck session at the end of last year, the Legislature passed a bunch of bills. Unaccountably, the then-Speaker (a Democrat) somehow didn't present nine of them to the Governor for her signature or veto. www.freep.com/story/news/p...

Republican Speaker Matt Hall said his office will await a review to determine how to handle bills left over from when Democrats controlled the House.

SNAP isn't about "people who don't work." It's about people who don't get paid enough to live.

Of the 40 or so million people who rely on food stamps:

* Two-thirds are children, seniors, or disabled

* Most working-age adults who receive SNAP are employed—but in jobs that pay poverty wages

This is blocks from where CBP used tear gas on 10/14 in Eastside, Chicago, a relatively unknown area w/o a high crime rate. It is largely Latino.

Eastside was the site of the Memorial Day Massacre of 1937, which saw ten protesting workers killed, 90 more injured, by the Chicago Police Department.

NEW: The entire staff supporting ACIP was laid off, and most working groups haven't met in months.

That means the US may not make routine vaccine recommendations for more than half of children in 2026, and it could halt new vaccines in the pipeline. My latest:
