When I was very young, I'm pretty sure my grandmother and Dad's sister used to go regularly to the Legion to play whist or bingo. There's no permanent club in Carmarthen now, but the BL meets in a pub in St Clears.

Cf the old Alexei Sayle joke about “running away to join the British legion, it’s not as exciting as joining the French foreign legion, but you can get a pint after hours”
But yeah, being shocked at the idea that the legion is using beer to raise money means you don't know what the legion is.

Tehran is facing zero water day - water crisis in Iran, massive heatwave with temperatures over 40C in Tehran

The regime is rotten, sure, but they are kept in place by foreign pressure - the population can't improve their lives the way things are controlled: very limited access to modern technology
Cousin A in Pontarddulais has sent me a photo of my maternal grandmother's older sister (with her husband), taken in about 1899. William and Emiah Annie had 12 children.

Okay, I've actually done something today! Sent a pic of Mum's dresser to a local antiques place and contacted a flooring company about small repairs to the parquet.

Life in Eleventh Century Britain: The Fyrd and the Housecarls: Before the Normans brought over their own version of feudalism, the Anglo-Saxons had a different way of calling up an army in need of defense. buff.ly/444Sfxy

🤔 Largely unnoticed by visitors to Ripon Cathedral, Henry Wilson’s 1913 repoussé pulpit gleams with Anglo-Saxon saints and burnished light.

📸 I worked hard here to capture how his craft bridges the past and present, the material and the spiritual. A real hidden gem. #thread

It's not exactly the same thing, but finding out that Jerry Orbach - who I knew as Lenny Briscoe from watching Law & Order with my mom - was also the voice of Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast broke my pre-adolescent brain.
I think everybody has a “Wallace Shawn from Young Sheldon” — my first one would probably be “Vincent Price, the guy who did the voice of Ratigan in The Great Mouse Detective”

And the whole Royal carriage cheered
A friend told me that her American dad got in touch to talk about some news he'd seen on Facebook: there are riots in England over DEI, and the King dramatically burst into parliament to tell Starmer off, and then Prince William did the same to Sadiq Khan. AI really is inventing bold new universes
