I keep thinking about @michaelhobbes.bsky.social's reporting from Utah in 2019. Even then, the state was retreating from Housing First—after being hailed as a success story—and embracing criminalization.

In hindsight, Utah's involuntary "treatment center" is not a rupture but the next logical step.
Why America Can’t Solve Homelessness

I posted this after Trump issued his executive order targeting homeless people.

This now appears to be happening. Utah is the test case.
It's not at all alarmist to expect that the new network of detention centers will be used to confine unhoused people—and to extract free labor from them. Everything in this executive order points in that direction.

Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

It suuuucks like I thought I’d live out my peak earning years as a guy who helps direct solar panel construction in ports or something, not as a Gallic Roman citizen in a city that just got cut off from supply to Mediterranean goods a year ago and can’t get any dried fish or loofahs for sponges.

When I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”
It’s very telling that opening your publication to MAGA “thought” requires a massive downgrade in quality control.

Here is DHS making false allegations about @katmabu.bsky.social.

Read the affidavit and show me where it alleges that she assaulted anyone.

Spoiler: it doesn't.

The conspiracy charge / title of the statute is throwing people off / leading to a lot of bad faith attacks.

The UAW made history last year by organizing a Southern auto plant for the first time since the 1940s.

They might do so again, after authorizing a strike at the VW plant.

It takes enormous courage to fight for your rights on the job in a hostile environment. Solidarity.

This week, ACA marketplaces announced huge increases in monthly premium payments. For a typical plan in the 30 states where the marketplaces are managed by the federal government, consumers can expect a 30% uptick on average in costs, thanks to a rule change that was quietly implemented by Trump.

Trump told reporters that he wanted to work with Democrats on an alternative to Obamacare, omitting that many of it's problems stem from decisions his own administration have made. “We have to fix health care, because Obamacare is a disaster.”

NOEM: No. We're gonna be out on the streets in full force and increase our activities to make sure kids are safe.

it's the unitary executive, the tribune of the people, the all-powerful sovereign, the sun and the moon. it can bomb fishermen and deport citizens. but it cannot, it turns out, free up money to pay for SNAP—there are laws, after all.

It‘s still three years until the next national election, the Nazis are leading several polls, and you’ve got fascists in the middle of Berlin acting like this. Good luck, Germany, if you’re trying to attract a sufficient number of non-white migrants to boost your economy. Good luck: you’ll need it.
The Nazis in Berlin are getting bolder: I saw one of them on the tram home this evening, a guy in his early twenties, who stared at me and smirked before looking away. it’s incredible how Germany has looked on as so many young people have drifted into this hate cult. It’s a betrayal, to be honest.

Final UC-Berkeley poll of Prop 50

Yes - 60%
No - 38%

Already voted: 67-33 Yes
Yet to vote: 57-43 Yes
California’s Prop 50 hugely important. Its approval by voters will not only combat Texas gerrymander but hopefully convince other Dem states to step up & counter Trump’s plan to rig midterms www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Pritzker: "Imagine it. Children who woke up that morning, expectant with joy & excitement to put on their costumes & celebrate with their neighbors in what they thought was a safe place at their homes. Armed, masked agents, terrorizing innocent people, especially children, is unconscionable."

On these centrist diagnoses, let's be blunt: Folks are obscuring what *they know to be true* about the thermostatic nature of politics (things fluctuate!) in order to overhype meaning of a narrow win driven largely by cost of living to fleece donors/push pet ideological projects. It's pretty gross.

Someone - if not the principal then presumably a professional advisor on law or PR - must have looked at the sentence "these censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations" and said "hang on, that makes it look like you don't believe him" And yet.
