"Peace if possible.

Justice at any rate."

I came across that quote a few years ago while reading a biograph of Timuel Black. I think about those words.

I think about those words a lot.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

If Portland’s blow up animals are the right language for Portland, this is the right language for Chicago.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

Event Horizon looks fucking incredible in 4K. I love all these high quality transfers of older films we’re getting.

“I don’t share all your politics but we can work together” is something people across the center left and left do actually manage to successfully do all the time, it just doesn’t allow for the kind of obsequious deference by one party to another that some people seem hungry for.

I probably don't like how a lot of these people want to handle abortion but that's kind of irrelevant in this moment and everyone gets that because we're not stupid. One gets the sense that people who endlessly harp on this point are really just upset about the context in which you yelled at *them*
mezentine.bsky.social
Everyone talks about the left being too full of purity testing and infighting but the thing is everyone actually seems to be able to hang together and recognize the importance of tactical solidarity with people who don't share all of your politics when you're all aimed at the same goal.

They have beaten, arrested, and detained several people including a live-streamer; still kettling people. Apparently the mayor has put a curfew into place to claim that the protesters are “unlawfully assembled” instead of exercising their constitutional rights. The protesters are still there.

Note the protesters are in a “designated free-speech area” for this protest outside of the facility. The IL police kettle them, & start beating several protesters to the ground anyway. Please keep this in mind when you see Gov Pritzker posting about how he is supposedly “standing up” against 🧊/feds.

Looking forward to seeing what a judge has to say about this.
It appears that at least one agent also has a rubber or foam bullet gun as well

I’m preparing for a war on the suburbs. It’s going to be a nightmare, a perfect mixture of a bunch of both economic and cultural landmines but it’s going to have to happen at some point.

Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US?
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.

My theory here is that they believe health is caused by virtue and therefore healthcare spending is resources wasted on the unvirtuous. Furthermore it should be the most virtuous who are in charge of what is healthy. So it's sort of a mystic soup of eugenics and hierarchy and 'justice'.
sameoldstory.co
This is so weird though. I know people keep confidently responding “they are eugenicists” and I’m sure this is true, but that alone feels insufficient to describe the behavior

anyone else notice that the west took a turn for the worse once the concept of signaling one’s own social virtue became derogatory, almost as if cynically deriding all displays of charity and good will is indicative of a deeply cynical and nihilistic society capable of collaborating in genocide

her advocacy for Palestinians doesn't bother me nearly as much as she is so desperately doing all this as an actual act of transparent virtue signaling, to fill the absence she has in depth of character

A group of hundreds of faith in coalition who started at a Maywood church just arrived at the detention center for a eucharistic procession.

They want to offer communion to detainees inside, but won't be able to get past the barricades and fence on Beach Street.

All the elections, trainings, civilian oversight boards, consent decrees, & civil lawsuits in the world won’t change the fact that we need to disentangle ourselves from systems of policing at every level of gov’t & reinvest those funds into the community resources that are actually keeping us safe.
gochujung.bsky.social
I see many ppl witnessing very clearly both how violent militarized policing truly is and how ineffectual gov’t, civil society, & other systems of policing are to change it or rein it in. But whether it’s lack of political courage or systems operating as intended, the solution is abolition.

Tonight I attended an exhibition of art by formerly incarcerated people reckoning with their solitary confinement. It included poetry, live painting, stop motion short films and a stunning soliloquy. It was a stark reminder that talent is far more widely distributed then society wants us to believe.
