I use a service which is $26 a week, I think that’s on par. (We do it for environmental/like-it-better reasons not cost.) Doing it yourself is extremely cost saving though, especially with multiple kids, if you’re very cost conscious I think you could get started for under $200.

I think this is true about like, “Tylenol causes autism” but frankly their health moves aren’t even internally coherent enough to explain this way. I think multiple people believe different things and they all take turns doing things.

when I was young and Republicans shut down the government my friends who were troops thought Obama was obligated to give Republicans anything they wanted to get them paid. I am positive that despite the appearance of a role reversal “Dems need to eat shit ASAP for the troops” will carry across

And it’s not like all the benefits of the private space are imaginary. Like sometimes drunk adults wander into the public park, or people bring their big dogs to “enjoy” the playground equipment. It’s probably good for us to keep our social muscles in shape navigating those circumstances buuuuut

Yeah like I think it’s good for me and my kids that we take them to public parks on the regular, but would I do that if I had a yard of any size? Certainly less, very possibly never

A lot of the third-space boosters don’t engage with, or even truly understand, that third-spaces are going to be filled with people you personally would not choose to hang out with, that’s part of the reason some cultures retreat to private spaces

I went on a walk and thought about this and concluded that the on-again-off-again things, one of the weirdest parts of it all, are probably because multiple people (some of whom are probably unknown to us) are seizing the reins and none of them have a unified plan for anything

Honestly I think it is very funny when people engage on the subject of “why is socializing so dysfunctional today” with that level of wildly misdirected, out-of-nowhere hostility. And it happens all the time!

Extreme childfree attitudes are restricted to subreddits like that big casual attitudes do permeate the site. And part of it is an extension of what Fig is talking about, antisocial attitudes like “why should I ever be inconvenienced by a child, i didn’t choose to have one!!!” seem normal today

Yeah I am also estranged from my mother for a lot of reasons, but I realized some years ago that contrary to online advice, for me maintaining a low contact, frequently difficult relationship was actually the best scenario for my mental health (I am not the only person involved though).

Reddit’s idea is absolutely that you shouldn’t have kids, BUT if you do you owe them everything in the world, their problems and bad behavior are 💯% your fault and they owe you and every other family member nothing ever. It becomes ideologically consistent when you remember these commenters—

Reddit’s self-help forums (which like it or not have an enormous impact on etiquette today, itself probably a canary) all insist you don’t owe anybody anything except your own biological children
