God this is such a pointless nightmare

I’ve read like three paragraphs of Martin Luther’s writing and that was enough to know the Germans didn’t need our help on this one

I wonder what this kid thinks about Nancy Pelosi, if Iraq is really the Only Important Thing. Big fan?

Baby food is really expensive right now!! Also I think my son’s car seat was twice as much as my daughter’s and it’s the same model
sameoldstory.co
I use a service which is $26 a week, I think that’s on par. (We do it for environmental/like-it-better reasons not cost.) Doing it yourself is extremely cost saving though, especially with multiple kids, if you’re very cost conscious I think you could get started for under $200.

The Trump administration on Saturday scrambled to rescind layoffs of hundreds of CDC scientists who were mistakenly fired on Friday night in what appeared to be a substantial procedural lapse.

I think this is true about like, “Tylenol causes autism” but frankly their health moves aren’t even internally coherent enough to explain this way. I think multiple people believe different things and they all take turns doing things.

when I was young and Republicans shut down the government my friends who were troops thought Obama was obligated to give Republicans anything they wanted to get them paid. I am positive that despite the appearance of a role reversal “Dems need to eat shit ASAP for the troops” will carry across
sameoldstory.co
that last part is true!!! imo. or maybe it’s the lack of FREE third spaces which the disproportionately impacts teens
sameoldstory.co
And it’s not like all the benefits of the private space are imaginary. Like sometimes drunk adults wander into the public park, or people bring their big dogs to “enjoy” the playground equipment. It’s probably good for us to keep our social muscles in shape navigating those circumstances buuuuut
sameoldstory.co
Yeah like I think it’s good for me and my kids that we take them to public parks on the regular, but would I do that if I had a yard of any size? Certainly less, very possibly never
sameoldstory.co
A lot of the third-space boosters don’t engage with, or even truly understand, that third-spaces are going to be filled with people you personally would not choose to hang out with, that’s part of the reason some cultures retreat to private spaces

People are bad at estimating how hard it is to conquer anything
sameoldstory.co
Some days it’s not shocking to me that we elected Donald Trump as POTUS it’s just shocking it took us this long
sameoldstory.co
And in case his meaning was not clear, he went on to loudly clarify that he meant we could conquer and/or kill every other country in the world and yet, amazingly, choose not to. You can’t top that, history!!
sameoldstory.co
Out at breakfast there was a guy loudly talking about how America was the greatest and most morally upstanding country in “all of history” because we generously allow every other nation to exist
sameoldstory.co
I went on a walk and thought about this and concluded that the on-again-off-again things, one of the weirdest parts of it all, are probably because multiple people (some of whom are probably unknown to us) are seizing the reins and none of them have a unified plan for anything

[most viscerally personally unpleasant person you've ever met] I am going to revolutionize America’s civic culture
sameoldstory.co
Honestly I think it is very funny when people engage on the subject of “why is socializing so dysfunctional today” with that level of wildly misdirected, out-of-nowhere hostility. And it happens all the time!
sameoldstory.co
Extreme childfree attitudes are restricted to subreddits like that big casual attitudes do permeate the site. And part of it is an extension of what Fig is talking about, antisocial attitudes like “why should I ever be inconvenienced by a child, i didn’t choose to have one!!!” seem normal today
sameoldstory.co
And I am certain having a relationship with any of her three children would be better for my mother’s mental health but “cut off everybody for anything!!!” internet culture convinced her otherwise
sameoldstory.co
Yeah I am also estranged from my mother for a lot of reasons, but I realized some years ago that contrary to online advice, for me maintaining a low contact, frequently difficult relationship was actually the best scenario for my mental health (I am not the only person involved though).

—are overwhelmingly kids themselves.
sameoldstory.co
Reddit’s idea is absolutely that you shouldn’t have kids, BUT if you do you owe them everything in the world, their problems and bad behavior are 💯% your fault and they owe you and every other family member nothing ever. It becomes ideologically consistent when you remember these commenters—
sameoldstory.co
Reddit’s self-help forums (which like it or not have an enormous impact on etiquette today, itself probably a canary) all insist you don’t owe anybody anything except your own biological children

I feel lots of things that felt like, were billed as, self-actualization read in retrospect as canaries in the coal mine for the fraying commitments we owe to each other as members of a society.

Relatedly, I recall a lot of "the joy of canceling plans" jokes and memes from the 2010s and now folks are talking about a loneliness epidemic, and, well...

People will scoff at virtue signaling and then wonder why today’s billionaires don’t build museums, libraries, hospitals, and universities like Gilded Age ones did.
