RTD’s Tales of the TARDIS were the first warning sign that things might go wrong.

I mean given Magneto’s philosophy he’d be backing Israel in Gaza. Which is why he’s a villain imo.Or at least why celebrating his philosophy is problematic.

It still feels weird that the tune “New York, New York” was written for the seventies film of the same name. And not an already famous tune they used for the title.

I think it’s deliberately in the story telling that the presence of Ian and Barbara mellows the Doctor and makes him a better person. Which means that they both turn him into the timelord he becomes and are indirectly responsible for saving the universe many many times.

This from the International Renewable Energy Agency is pretty mindblowing compared to a decade ago

Yeah. His credo is “this injustice justifies mass murder so it doesn’t happen again.”

Thing is it’s been decades since i did A-level English but my memory isn’t that it demands a much greater technical proficiency or ability to communicate than GCSE’s did.

It was skills in literary interpretation and essay writing. None of which is essential.

A Kremlin spokesperson said "we certainly wouldn't publish anything like that in the Evening Standard"

Not, i think, when people endorse the sentiment online unironically.

I know i’m overthinking it but magneto is not right - and the “Magneto was Right” slogan at a time when governments feel self righteously justified to horrible things just as Magneto would lands badly.

Not strictly true. What makes a country a “European state” is quite deliberately not defined and is to be looked at on a case by case basis.

Cyprus set the precedent that being geographically outside Europe isn’t a bar.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Weirdly i remember going to a lecture in the nineties where they talked about all the crazy things the internet would do to the office. (no phones, imagine such a thing) but the lecturer was insistent the truly paperless office would *never* happen.

Today I am mostly thinking about the popular inter-war literary genre 'animal stories written by fascists'. Join me.
Title page of a collection of animal stories by Henry Williamson: TARKA THE OTTER, SALAR THE SALMON, THE EPIC OF BROCK THE BADGER, CHAKCHEK THE PEREGRINE.

This is great news. We've hired the classicist Spencer Klavan to teach at New College of Florida. Goodbye gender studies; hello, Greek literature.

Truly excited to be teaching an online survey course in Greek literature this fall semester @NewCollegeofFL. Even more excited that it's open to the public. Please join in here! We'll be reading Homer, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, and lots more.

The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

Yes, but why couldn’t they do it to him in a crappy fantasy film?

I'd be enjoying this Northern Ireland v Germany game a lot more if it wasn't for the Northern Ireland commentary team who are insane in their enthusiastic bias.

The addition of a few classic comedy series on BBCiPlayer does give a chance to finally watch the first episode of what were staples as a kid. Its funny having known what the set-up was as a kid to actually see the episodes that establish it. "To The Manor Born" is a surprisingly smart little script
To the Manor Born - Series 1: 1. Grantleigh
Sitcom. Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, an upper-class widow, is forced into an alliance with a self-made man in a bid to keep her stately home.
