In my book, I argue that this kind of elite disagreement is an important constraint in democracies. And up til now these concerns would make the president think twice, so the “stepping down” would not ever happen. Now it’s happening, but there’s nobody else to pay attention to the fire alarm.
"One current and one former U.S. official, both of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters, said that Admiral Holsey had raised concerns about the mission and the attacks on the alleged drug boats" near Venezuela

BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV is set to effectively disband Opus Dei in the coming weeks.

This would be the most sweeping internal reform of his pontificate — and a dramatic continuation of Pope Francis’s legacy.
NEW: Pope Leo Set To Break Up Opus Dei
If Pope Leo does indeed approves a plan that effectively dissolves Opus Dei’s structure, it would be the most significant internal action of his short pontificate to date.

PENN IS OUT! That means both institutions that signed prior agreements with the administration have said no. We're at 3 rejections.

I told y'all once the second one hit yesterday, the clock started for the rest.

My 2024 election analysis remains: "I dislike Biden because [thing Trump did], and I miss Trump because [thing Biden did]. I voted for Trump again because I want [thing Harris promised], but I'm also worried, and I hope Trump doesn't do [core Trump campaign promise]."
Excellent article here. Every day as I travel around my MAGA-heavy county (Trump by 46 pp), I hear people saying "I didn't vote for this." It was all abstract until January 20. They liked what they heard but they never thought he'd follow through with it the way he has. They were wrong.
ICE's military raids and masked kidnappings are resonating deeply/negatively in the cultural spaces we keep hearing Dems need to reach: Manosphere, Joe Rogan, country music, disengaged voters. That's rare and it gives Dems a big opening to engage.

Thoughts on this:

NO KINGS? Just show up. No frog costume, OKAY! No sign, OKAY! The most effective message we can send is that we are here, our numbers are vast, and we are not going to continue to take it.

JUST SHOW UP. You'll feel better. I promise.

That would really be the end of majoritarian democracy in the United States.

It would represent the effective death of the republic. Horrifying to think they would leave people no political recourse to address their concerns or be heard.

Truly frightening place we’re headed in America.
If the Supreme Court strikes down Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which has been interpreted to require the creation of majority-minority districts, Republicans could eliminate upward of a dozen Democratic-held districts across the South. Here's how.
The Supreme Court Case That Could Hand the House to Republicans
Democrats would be in danger of losing around a dozen majority-minority districts across the South if the court struck down part of the Voting Rights Act.

The mechanism through which Trump is paying the troops is the most blatant large Antideficiency Act (ADA) violation in US history. It's also clearly willful. No one has been charged under the ADA before, but violations carry a two-year jail term. The statute of limitations is five years.

Every time something like the GOP chat leak occurs I hear smart people arguing that shame could be a useful tactic. But shame only works if the bad actors think their actions are bad. Hypocrisy, shame, these Victorian-ish norms are just that, norms, guardrails, and they don't work against fascism.

Holy shit. This is Angelo Elia, a legislative correspondent for Congressman Dave Taylor.

According to @rooster.info, during a Zoom meeting today, he had an American nazi flag displayed in the background.

This is good: Rep Eric Swalwell tells me House Dems are now discussing making an end to mask-wearing a precondition for ICE funding.

"When we are in the majority, the masks are coming off," he says.

This is the next frontier in anti-Trump resistance.

SCIENCE POLICY NEWS:

During Yom Kippur, all the members of the High Energy Physics Advisory Committee (HEPAP), myself included, received a letter thanking us for our service and telling us essentially that the almost 40 yo standing federal advisory committee was no more. ⚛️🧪🔭
