Howdy folks,
I set up a gofundme for my cat. I rescued him from abuse, and now he needs heart treatment. Almost $500 just for the tests. If you can't donate, believe me I get it. Reskeeting is very much appreciated. Thank you!

“Pope Leo XIV’s eyes grew misty Wednesday as an El Paso delegation led by Bishop Mark Seitz presented him letters and a video that captured the fears and anxieties of people facing mass deportation in the United States …”

The church “cannot be silent,” Pope Leo said.
jackjenkins.me
Oh — new reporting on Pope Leo from El Paso Matters, citing footage they have of yesterday's meeting.

Sounds like the pope was even *more* forceful in urging U.S. bishops to speak out about immigration than first reported.

I mean, that's…not subtle. elpasomatters.org/2025/10/08/e...
“I was struck at the beginning (of the video), it talks about the feeling of powerlessness, which I think is so much. I think it’s so important that we as a church give a message of hope in the midst of these horrible struggles, what’s going on in so many cities in the United States right now. At least the church cannot be silent,” the pope told the El Pasoans, according to a video of the meeting provided to El Paso Matters by Hope Border Institute.

Seitz responded: “You’ve spoken very strongly. We’re trying to do the same in our country and yet not get into the political fray the best that we can.”

Pope Leo told Seitz that he’d like to see the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops become more vocal on immigration issues.

“I mean, even within the conference, there are challenges. That’s one place they should be … I wish they were stronger in their own voice,” Leo said, adding that Archbishop Timothy Broglio, the president of the conference, should speak out more on immigration.

“There’s been some good movement in that sense, but I certainly intend to continue to encourage” U.S. bishops to address immigration, Leo said.

I complained earlier that WaPo's story on Trump inviting PizzaGate guy to the White House was insane. Not so this Independent story.
www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...
Not to be outdone, in came Jack Posobiec, one of the right’s weirdest hangers-on, who is perhaps most famous for the time he spread the “Pizzagate” theory and then got removed from the pizzeria in question by police for filming a child’s birthday party. Running with the major theme of the hour — that Antifa is definitely, certainly, really real despite all evidence to the contrary, and that everybody needs to stop saying it’s not real — Posobiec made a startling claim: Antifa is so clearly real that it “has been going on for almost 100 years ... going back to the Weimar Republic in Germany.”

And look, yes, it is absolutely true that there were anti-fascist protesters in the Weimar Republic. If you’ll remember, those were the people taking issue with the early versions of the Nazis. But it’s sort of difficult to position yourself as the good guys if you’re aligning yourself with the Nazis in your historical analogy. I’m just saying that, if I was Posobiec’s publicity guy, I might ask him to drop that soundbite from future public appearances.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

These two things are of a piece, even if the motivations and details differ.

Trump’s justification for his authoritarian crackdown is an America that doesn’t exist.

legacy.www.documentcloud.org/documents/26...
Recession and Covid-19 pandemic. Newsom v. Trump, Case No. 25-4870, Dkt. 183, Ex. 14 at 7
(N.D. Cal. Sept. 2, 2025). The number of people reporting to work in California’s private sector
decreased by 3.1% in June 2025 and by 4.9% in July 2025, even though those numbers increased
elsewhere. Id. at 1, 4. The study explained: “As a result of [federal] enforcement actions, many
noncitizens avoided work, school, and other public spaces, leading to declines in consumption,
business, work and employment.” Id. at 2. A Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce official
confirmed that the National Guard deployment harmed “small businesses throughout the region,”
explaining that businesses saw “a sharp decrease in customers,” “increased staffing shortages,”
and incurred “additional costs” for “security” and other expenses. Id., Dkt. 183-3 ¶¶ 5-9.
Attendance at public events in Los Angeles also suffered. For example, the director of an LGBTQ+
organization that holds an annual event in a predominantly Latino neighborhood stated that 2,000
fewer people attended the post-deployment event this year compared to prior years. Id., Dkt. 183-
6 ¶¶ 4, 13-14.
207. Similarly, according to reporting in the Washington Post, the deployment of
National Guard troops in the District of Columbia depressed key industries, including tourism,
restaurants, and hospitality services. Within a week after the deployment of federal troops in D.C.,
foot traffic in the District dropped 7 percent on average, with restaurant reservations showing an
even steeper drop.
208. Defendants’ military incursion into Illinois threatens similar immediate harms by
depressing business activities, travel, and tourism in Illinois communities. Chicago taxes various
sales and services. E.g., Mun. Code of Chi. §§ 3-24-030 (hotel tax), 3-30-030 (restaurant tax); 3-
40-010 (sales tax). Thus, when businesses in Chicago experience declining sales, Chicago receives
less tax revenue.

Important to note ICE tends to drop off detainees before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m., which is why people were protesting at 5 a.m. to begin with. It's not because waking up at 4 a.m. was a convenient time for protesters!

New: Broadview, IL Mayor Katrina Thompson issued an executive order today - her first this year - limiting protest outside the Broadview ICE facility to between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The order cites "recent escalation of violence by ICE" at the facility as reason to restrict protest there.

Look. Invading our own country is about as straightforward a case as you can have for impeachment. The GOP abandoning the Constitution is kind of the only story there is and it gets no coverage.
