Desmosomes are adhesive junctions that mediate the integrity of tension prone tissues like the heart and the skin. Yet, how desmosomes sense and respond to mechanical stimuli are unknown. We show that actomyosin forces alter the conformation of desmoplakin, a key desmosomal protein.
