“Catastrophic threats to Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Bahamas and other parts of the Caribbean,” all “among those who have contributed the least to the climate crisis and yet are on the frontlines of its deadly and costly consequences.”
Erika Spanger from UCS explains how climate change is fueling Hurricane Melissa and what it means for people in its path.
"Let’s not forget that there are those to hold accountable for disasters like this: the policymakers and fossil fuel companies who have long obstructed climate action, lied about climate science, and left communities to face the destruction of extreme disasters."

Every $1 invested in SNAP generates $1.80 in local economic activity. Without SNAP, that will mean a loss of $15 billion to the US economy just in November alone.
Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Give to your local food bank. Build mutual aid wherever and however you can. If we’re going to make something better it’s going to depend on reinvigorating a sense of interconnectedness.

We’re all in this together and the fight depends on recognizing that.

If you have it please donate cash to the food banks. $10 in their hands will feed more people than the $10 worth of canned goods you can buy for retail prices. Also check on your elders. Many of them will not admit they rely on these programs so grocery gift cards or a surprise bag of staples

Hey California, our tool makes it extra easy to talk to your neighbors about passing Prop 50. Trump is trying to grab permanent control of the House by rigging the midterm maps, and California has a key role to play in leveling the playing field: neighbor2neighbor.io/campaign/fb6...
The time of old-school unions with cronyist leadership has passed, but it’s not gone completely yet. For the last 15 years there has been a rebirth of highly democratic, highly representational unions-the successful UTLA strike would have been impossible without this. Labor is still cleaning house.

Stop overrelying on "AI" for important shit. Like, honestly, stop using it for important shit at all, but definitely stop uncritically trusting it at the level of the GODDAM FEDERAL JUDICIARY.
Federal Judges— or staff, but same-same— used "AI" to summarize & draft rulings, issued them w/o checking the work, leading to basic factual errors, & thus undermining the facticity & validity of the rulings entire.

Gee. Who Could Have Foreseen. *stares directly into the camera like in the office*
Two federal judges say use of AI led to errors in US court rulings
Two federal judges admitted in response to an inquiry by U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley that members of their staff used artificial intelligence to help prepare recent court orders that Grassley called "error-ridden."

I'm serious: It's very probably long past time to stop using the current paradigm of "generative AI."

It comes from, depends on, and perpetuates so much environmental and social harm.

Reinvision a better way than this. JFC.

So much heinous stuff in here! $1 billion from a public education institution to the federal government?? That’s not only extorting the univ, that’s extorting the state. But also my head explodes over the violation of faculty rights to determine curriculum. If UCLA agrees, it won’t be UCLA anymore.

Tear gas is an abortifacient. Being used widely in residential neighborhoods. And I don’t see any so-called pro-lifers protesting. 🤔
Video from witness here from the moment CBP gassed neighbors who had gathered outside after the kidnapping.

Agent rolls a canister at the crowd out of the window of their car as they reverse away from people with whistles and bikes.

After Citizens United, billionaire political spending exploded — from $31 million in 2010 to $2.6 billion in 2020.

And 2024’s numbers are even higher.

The consequences were predictable — and permanent.

We're in an emergency situation with an outcome that will have serious consequences for the farmworker community if Proposition 50 does not pass. Before you vote on Prop 50, take a look at who’s spending money to stop it.

Oh, I forgot to mention the protestors are part of an interfaith coalition organizing to get ICE out of the Bay Area. Feds are attacking ministers and people of faith.

Fam, this is a challenging moment. We (as reporters) are trying to balance urgency of news & amplification of resistance narratives with not assisting in putting people in prison. It's tough for everyone right now with how fast videos go viral. There's a lot we are not sharing.
Pro-tip: if you have video of you or others directly intervening to obstruct ICE or de-arrest someone, for god’s sake don’t post it on social media. Or at a minimum blur faces first. You’re just begging for federal charges.

love this.
Last school year I started making meals on Sundays to bring into the student fridge on campus. 10-12 meals/week. The impact was incredible, and others started sharing things as well. We really can take care of each other 💜

Do you live in an apartment complex? How about printing out some fliers letting your neighbors know that on a particular day of the week, u will be cooking X extra meals and that anyone who needs one can stop by your place at X hour to pick one up no questions asked? Can even leave them at the door.
