There's no "regular politics" anymore because you can no longer maintain the idea that we all agree on common goals but we only differ about the means of getting there or whatever. The guys in charge now are plainly amoral, sadistic nihilists. They delight in it! You can't civilly disagree with that

i would not be surprised if business types, particular family business tyrants, are starting to sweat things as their cravings for ~labor discipline ~ have given way to fears of labor shortage

I should mention that I appreciate this framing from a Christian. It's a fantastic example of calling out the problem without demonizing anyone who isn't the ancient equivalent of a Musk or Pinochet.

Many of us grew up in the church being taught to root for Moses, Daniel, and John the Baptist in the Bible, only to grow up and have our churches question our faith for not cheering on the Pharaohs, Nebuchadnezzars, and Herods in our world today.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

They are not planning "a violent crackdown" on 10.18. What they are doing is sending a signal to their shock troops to try to cause havoc. But those shock troops will be vastly outnumbered. Go out and protest freely. Do not be cowed.

Pharisees, the ancestors of nearly every contemporary Jew, don't stop being Jews when they're used by Christians and cultural Christians as props or slurs.

Amy Coney Barrett defends heavy use of the shadow docket: "If we wrote a long opinion, it might give the impression that we have finally resolved the issue, and in none of these cases have we finally resolved the issue."

More on the legality of Trump paying the troops from another account - now appears maybe it isn't legal? Reporters: Dig into this!

Not that Trump/Vought/Hegseth gaf, but among other ways in which the law says this may NOT be done:
A) The part of 8005 I've underlined in green says money transferred to another account is "available… for the same time period" as that other account; that other acc't expired on Sept 30.

Last time I checked, the kosher Chinese place in DC had an Ethiopian menu.

Because it's about being nasty to their local Israelis and Jews, not about the country they only care about in a mythic fashion.
statsjew.bsky.social
Remembering the time I saw a pizza place offering sushi and thought "weird, I assumed only kosher places did that" and then looking up their menu to discover they were indeed kosher.

Sushi at kosher pizza places is A Thing.
statsjew.bsky.social
In most cities, there are only a few kosher restaurants. They aren't really competing with those other places much, but with people eating at home. So if they offer an additional cuisine (like sushi, though there's a place in DC that does Indian) they can get some families eating out more often.

My husband has a great theory: most restaurants are competing with lots of other restaurants, so they want to specialize and only sell what they make best. Most people will get pizza at a pizza store, and go to the Japanese restaurant for Sushi. But...

Yeah it's like, also, Israel isn't colonising Montreal or New Orleans or whatever. It's a narcissistic fantasy of pretending to be the real victim of an actual genocide happening in another continent

But I don't really get down with the "Israel has never made anything of its own, only stolen things from others." both because I don't think anyone living in a country with a colonial past gets to throw those stones and also because that really flattens how culture actually develops.

You don't need to be nice to Israelis. Certainly a lot of the mass culture within the nation is deeply fucked, and they have directly benefited for a very long time from a system of mass violence and expropriation.

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

NYC has way too many cops as it is, and way too many of them who shouldn't be cops in the first place. Let them walk (most of them won't, anymore than they did last time they threatened). If needed, they're easy to replace.

My kid was looking for something to watch and I turned on Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It was kind of weird to see Nazis as generic bad guys defeated by magic. Maybe because the original book came out in 1943. The main threat is seen as Imperialist, not racist.

what is illuminating, in my opinion, is how many foods have been created by jews that have been claimed by non-jews as their regional specialty, like bagels, fish & chips, and old bay seasoning, for which we are stripped of any credit, while accused of stealing others' dishes.

Israeli couscous (which isn't even called couscous in Israel) was a 20th Century Israeli invention based on eastern European noodle dishes. It's not even Mizrachi.
statsjew.bsky.social
If someone is talking about "thugs taking over a neighborhood" and and you point out that it's racist, they don't get to say "what, you think all Black people are thugs? You are so racist". Pointing out dogwhistles is not racist.
