When we say “everyone should mask” we don’t actually expect people will. We know how selfish people are. But we say it because:

1) it’s factually true

2) if even a few people listen to us that’s a few more lives saved and, as the Talmud says, every life is a universe.

For the "everyone should mask" crowd: If you want to protect yourself, get vaccinated. If you want to add a layer of protection, wear a mask. If you fear getting infected despite those 2 precautions, avoid going where you believe the risk is elevated. Don't expect the world to take care of you.

late dx autistic people didn’t get to grow up as ourselves, we grew up playing a masked version of ourselves to try and avoid humiliation and punishment.
and now, as adults we spend what feels like an eternity learning which parts of ourselves are truly us, and which parts we created for our safety

people are incredibly happy to misunderstand autistics. i am selectively mute and severely lacking on social graces, and the truth is if you lack social skills you can not get hired and people will just decide you're rude and stubborn. they dont even try to understand you or ask questions.

To the Editor:
I am one of these so-called profoundly autistic people this article describes. I cannot utter meaningful speech, and as a result, I was branded for years as someone with an intellectual disability and an I.Q. of 40. All this time, however, I understood everything that was going on around me. I just could not show it to others because of my deranged relationship with my own body.
I am concerned about the creation of a separate category, called profound autism, for those of us with the most severe disabilities.
There are real differences between the sort of autism that I have and so-called Asperger's syndrome. But it does not help us at all to impose a hierarchy of lower and higher functioning. We need to figure out how to tap into the skills and insights of those of us who cannot talk, who make up anywhere from 25 percent to 40 percent of the autistic community, depending on the estimate.
For me, the way out of this dilemma was learning to communicate by typing. I suddenly went from being seen as intellectually impaired to taking college classes. I was never low-functioning, and neither are my autistic brothers and sisters without the ability to speak. I was just misjudged and ignored, and I fear that my fate will be the fate of many others termed low functioning in this new schema.

I've never seen a single skill taught to an autistic kid by an ABA therapist that required ABA therapy to be learned. Not one.

I *have* seen many harms imposed upon autistic kids because ABA therapists considered autistic traits like sensory needs "behaviors," however.

Parents need to understand that autism is inborn, meaning that trying to “cure” autism will not help their autistic child one bit—though it will likely traumatize that child while warping their parents’ attitude towards them.

Did you know that asexuality is not covered by the UK's Equality Act 2010? If you look at how sexual orientation is defined, it does not include not being attracted to anyone as part of it.

We are amongst the least likely to be out at work, in education and in our personal lives.
