It's just 28 days to WFC. PR3 has gone out and with it the news about our new MC. We are very sorry to lose Sarah Pinborough but delighted to welcome Joanne Harris.
Joanne Harris was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has written over 20 novels, published in over 50 countries.

Hello! I'll be chatting with @eidyngray.scot about my books and the folklore that inspires me at @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social. I'm attending all weekend, so if you spot me feel free to come say hello 👋
A deliciously gothic graphic sharing the details of Rhiannon's appearance at World Fantasy Con. She's on the British and Irish Folk panel on Thursday, October 30th at 6pm.

The October 2025 Folkbyte newsletter is a week late this month because I was a guest at Sydney Comic Con last weekend. But here it is with news of the event, information about my World Fantasy Convention schedule, and a few other news items.

Despite tournaments and wilderness camping, ‘Tge French Ambassador’ is on page 300 this morning. I hope to finish up before #worldfantasy in Brighton 😊

Decided to try following along with #drawtober this year! This is my art for prompt 1, candlelit messenger.
This is called ‘The Catacombs’, and I’ll be selling the original at World Fantasy Convention 2025. It’s been a while since I’ve taken part in Drawtober, and I’m really enjoying it so far!

Oh this is so nice! Thank you Oli!
The book's currently out of print but if you're going to World Fantasy and you'd like a copy, I'm bringing a few along. Just let me know!
And yeah, I have to hurry up and get that out somewhere again.

I absolutely loved 'Under The Moon', a short, beautifully written SFFH story collection by E.M. Faulds. Small in size, enormous (sublunary) in scope, and frequently moving.

I am cracking on with the World Fantasy Award novella shortlist. I reread of Crypt of the Moon Spider, which is even creepier the second time. Now I’m reading In the Shadow of Their Dying by Michael R. Fletcher & Anna Smith Spark.

I admit I had *way* more fun drawing this wee guy than I thought I would for drawtober prompt number 2: Toad Astrologer
What’s the verdict, should I sell prints at World fantasy Convention this year?

It occurs to me that the last time I was at World Fantasy (UK) was 2013. I was there as a fan, attending panels and at one point nervously pitching a book I'd planned to write about dragons.

Times change. Keep writing!

I'm pleased to announce that I'll be on a panel at World Fantasy Con! I'll be talking about Queer Horror at 11am on Saturday in the Edinburgh room.

Otherwise, I'm volunteering at the art show, and you can find me sitting behind the desk trying to tempt you into spending money on other people's art.

@worldfantasy2025.bsky.social I'm on a panel Occult + Adventure - which fits The Crooked Medium's Guide to Murder perfectly.

My period 1880s onwards a glorious period for UK #fantasy: Dracula, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, She (etc), Dorian Gray, spiritualism, esoterica... +Holmes
#books #spooky #murder
Test: a devilish dance through Victorian fakery… a story that's mysterious, driven and, above all, great fun to read. David, Blue Book Balloon

Cover The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Murder by Stephen Cox
A striking book cover with the title and author name dominating.
A rich dark blue background, and a touch of mist. The text appears in gold in a gold rectangular frame, the font is old fashioned implying C19th century. The frame has three rondels or cameos each containing a picture. Top right is a golden bee brooch with the body and one wing streaked with red blood. Middle left is foxgloves, spires of small bell flowers in pink, white and purple. Bottom right is a dark brown medicine bottle, with a pale label. The word LAUDANUM is just visible.
There are pink highlights on some of the letters.
Taken together it is bold, mysterious, and Victorian.
